Many mods have dependencies (and they won't work without them) so you should always read the forum posts of the mods you're interested in. And if you think another mod has some functionality that might conflict with the mod of desire a quick search within the forums should always give a somewhat useful answer or even point to a patch to make it work.
Start off by keeping a clean copy of KSP around so you can start over when you messed up (which really takes a lot to make KSP not function properly).

I tailored this modlist towards the x64 KSP .exe played with forced DX11 to keep the RAM usage low. I have yet to encounter any graphical glitches that are said to happen when forcing DX11 and game works quite good. I'm playing this on a i7 from 2009 with 12GB of RAM and a 4GB GPU. The game takes about 6 to 7, sometimes 8 GB or RAM with minimal stutter, depending on how long i'm playing.
Some of these mods also need some ingame configuration to suit your prefered UI Style and Gameplay but should be pretty self explanatory once you hit the button on the toolbar and open the settings.
This is also tailored towards some kind of realism and mods like:
Kerbalism
Deadly Reentry
Ferram Aerospace Research -Liebe-
might not be everyone's cup of tea and you might want to switch Kerbalism for some of the more forgiving Life Support mods like USI Life Support, TAC or Snacks.
If you do drop the realism mods (especially Kerbalism) there are some other mods you might want to take a look at cause they're awesome:
