So you need Planetary Base Systems:
http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/133606-130-kerbal-planetary-base-systems-v145-19-june-2017/
which has
algie farm = electricity + ore + mulch -> fertilizer
greenhouses = electricity + mulch + fertilizer -> food
here is the guide how they work
https://github.com/Nils277/KerbalPlanetaryBaseSystems/wiki/Life-Support-Guide
it does not take much space the automatic greenhouse is very tiny and very efficient. When you got that running ships can actually go to your moon bases or space stations and fetch food which is produced there and dump mulch into the station.
You can build a base with no personnel in it. Or just temporary and then fly them home. just to fullfill the contract.
Or if you want the base manned then fly food to them. You can extend the endurance by equiping it with machines that filter air and water. But in the end they will run out of supplies.
Only with greenhouses can they stay until they eventually get homesick.
I forgot if MKS has a greenhouse, if it has one it is the one that look like mobile processing lab for science only that one grows food ... BUT ... it need to be manned by 2 kerbals.
Planetary base systems have automatic greenhouses.
Basically, you'll need 1 aeroponics module, 1 kerbitat, 1 agricultural module, 1 habitation module, 1 pioneer module and enough solar panels to feed the colony according to the wiki.
I am using USI-LS because it's lighter than TAC, all is gathered under the label "supplies" (food,water, oxygen) so i can focus on the colonisation part.
