how do scientists increase science?

Ive taken a scientist with me, Ive had him bring stuff back, but I always get the same amount of science. I remember a few years ago the science would almost double just for having a scientist on board.

I never knew they gave a boost. All I knew was that they make you able to run certain experiments multiple times. But then again, I've never had a fully upgraded one.

I don't think they add more anymore and instead are able to do research on a science ship which is pretty much just free science. Also you can level up your crew out in space with this.

Scientists no longer boost the amount of science gained from recovering experiments and provide no bonus from transmitting data (although the green text may make it look like they do).

They just speed up a labs processing speed

Do they still boost the science from being in a returning a vessel? For things such as vessel returning from orbital flight, mun-flyby etc.
