Orbital Shipyards?
What do you think of them adding the ability to build ships in orbit at like a shipyard, using something like ore or a new resource that you have to mine from a planet. It would be a end game accomplishment, like at the end of the tech tree. You would have to build it in orbit wherever you want it, then supply it with resources and you could build ships there.

There are mods for what you suggest as far as I know.
Or go play some korean RPG and grind your life away.

in what way is it grinding?

read original post. Resources, mining, resupply. Does it ring a bell?

it does not ring a bell but it does sound really grindy now that i think about it

"finaly i built a new space ship in orbit!!!! now time to make that same trip 8 more times to build an even NEWER SHIP"
*coughcough* KIS and KAS *coughcough*

i have used those mods and im fairly sure they did not add new resources to mine and a orbital factory to build ships from
Put a storage container with ship parts into orbit and then build the ships. Bam

thats no where near the same as being able to set up a base on duna then build ships from duna

There is the extraplanetary launchpads (EPL) mod. Steam will probably hide this link, but you can press 'Reply' and see where it leads: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/54284-122-extraplanetary-launchpads-v560/

good idea but i hope you have a beefy pc because i have a huge mun orbital base and i run at 10 fps.

I'm all for orbital shipyards.

I build some pretty big ships, and in order to get them into actual orbit (instead of staying forever in the VAB as museum pieces) I end up building some ridiculous launch vehicles.

Think "cluster of seven KS-25x4 modules". And then laugh at that mental image, because the launch vehicles I end up building are bigger.

We already have that. Its called docking ports
I made a ship yard pictured below. I just send parts up and dock those to the station and then once it's all in space I'll hack the fully built ship in to orbit and dock it to the station and delete the parts to the ship. Easiest way I've found to do it. Top is for super large ship assembly and the bottom is more for just refueling stuff.

Sure, as long you don't need struts which I doubt will be the case for rockets big enough to require orbital assembly.
Edit to add: I guess you could use autostrut cheats, but that would be somewhat unsatisfying.

Or just use multiple docking ports. They (for me at least) are generally the least bendy joint of most of my ships

This doesn't sound Kerbal, but the equipment to manufacture most of the parts and process raw materials needed for a spacecraft from scratch would amount to 1000s of tons. Would be a neat end game to set up an functioning, self sufficient orbital industry though.

I've done what the OP is proposing and it was pretty entertaining the first time, but for most stuff it's easier to just bring stuff up from kerbin.
By the time you've mined the ore, converted it into metal, converted that into rocketparts, staffed a workshop and waited for the ship to build, you could have just flown one up from the ground.
Where the system really shines is when you start feeding your used boosters and other orbital debris into the recyclers. You get loads of heavy rocketparts from junk you didn't want anyways.

And as Andylaugel pointed out, the mod the OP is refering to is ExtraPlanetary Launchpads.
