When is World of Goo 2 coming to Steam?
This topic is about a useful question that I do not really see people asking.

If you come to this forum for criticism over epic games, or 2D Boy's decision, I assure you there are more suitable places for that.

I fully understand the developer's viewpoint that the good sequel would not exist without Epic's support. However, many players agree that a Steam purchase holds more value than Epic Store or even an independent drm free purchase. Given what I know at the time of writing, I sadly feel compelled to wait until better options become available, isolating myself from related content in the meantime. I did not view the latest trailer and I unsubscribed from every related YouTube channel.

When is World of Goo 2 coming to Steam?

The "no steam deal" lasts around one year usually. I was surprised how many new games on steam were on EGS prior to their appearance. When I discovered World of Goo 2 does the "no steam deal", and given the way it was communicated with considerable latency, I even became worried a certain other indie developer was about to pull the same. He wasn't thankfully.

We’re grateful for this! You’ve likely seen similar arrangements with other games, and I imagine ours is comparable.

If you don’t use Epic, that’s ok. You can also get the game direct from us at worldofgoo2.com — DRM-free, for Win / Mac / Linux. And if you have a Nintendo Switch, you can get it on the eShop.

In particular note the line "You’ve likely seen similar arrangements with other games, and I imagine ours is comparable." Every other game I am aware of with a epic exclusivity deal (even if this one isn't actually exclusive) has a duration of 1 year. His response is that it is similar to those, ie a 1 year duration. This means that world of goo 2 will most likely be available on steam August 2 2025.

Why does the dev not just say so:

Another user in the thread[tomorrowcorporation.com] pointed out that the dev is likely under contract to not say when it will release in steam.

The second part is rich! Are you doing comedy standup while not writing on forums?

Also, WoG2 is not EGS exclusive, you can download it from: https://worldofgoo2.com/

I failed spectacularly at trying to imply "EGS exclusive" means "no steam". I edited it.

When people take what I mean seriously as me being intentionally funny, I might as well be.

Why are you here?

Because when people say that Steam is better than DRM free I think it's comedy.

There are thousands of DRM free games on Steam. Opting out of Steam's DRM is almost as easy as making straw man posts on the forums.

Can I download them on unsupported platforms?

What the hell does this even mean? When can you ever download a game you bought anywhere from some other unsupported platform?

You can with World of Goo 2. Same with GOG for example. You can download a copy you purchased, no matter what platform you're on. Because you purchase a copy. You're free to download that copy and store it wherever you want. Whether your platform is supported by the distributor is irrelevant.

On Steam you purchase a license to play the game through the Steam platform. You never own a copy. If tomorrow Steam stops supporting Windows 10 (or whatever else you're using), then you can no longer download the games you thought you purchased.

In what world owning a license (permission to run) is better than owning a copy?

You can download any platform specific version of your game licensed on Steam, regardless of which platform you are currently on. Steam allows this, though you need to dig a bit to find the option.

There is even support for running Windows distributions on Linux using
Steam Proton. Steam adds Linux support for many games that otherwise lack them.

"Licensing a game through Steam" is great because Steam adds a lot of value. Convenient download, updates, cloud save, extensive controller support, and the ability to basically turn your computer into a video game console using a TV screen and Steam Big Picture. Many people do not care about Steam drm and value these features. And they know Steam will not betray us for a very long time.

There is no option within the Steam application or the web interface to to do this. There is a way to trick the application with a manifest file that you got from somewhere else, but this is not normal usage and Valve are able to change it any day and it doesn't always work.
Furthermore, there is no way to download games without having the Steam application. I can't waltz onto the website and download the game. Can't run Steam application? Tough luck.

Convenient download
You should make an asterisk here: "On supported platforms". Not so convenient anymore?

updates
This is actually bad, because Steam takes away control from the game you want to play. What if I don't want to update? Now I need to jump through hoops to make Steam not update it and have special launchers. Overall, this detracts value, not adds.

cloud save
Solvable with a Python script that you can write in 5 minutes of your so precious time.

extensive controller support
You should make an asterisk here: "On supported platforms".
Third party apps do this better.

and the ability to basically turn your computer into a video game console using a TV screen and Steam Big Picture.
Yeah, but if I wanted a console, I'd just buy a console and wouldn't have to deal with all the other trouble?

Many people do not care about Steam drm and value these features
Many people don't care about Denuvo, and your point is? Many people might jump tomorrow from the roof, should I follow them in that too?

And they know Steam will not betray us for a very long time.
Betray?? Valve is a corporation out there to make money. Words like trust and betray are not in its lexicon and have never been. If they would want to really promise you something, they'd add legally binding clauses. There are NONE in favor of the consumer. Any day they can cut the cord on whatever they like. You'll be all angry, talk about betrayal and stuff, and they will not care one bit.

And I will repeat the question again:
In what world owning a license (permission to run) is better than owning a copy?

I cannot answer this in any way that will satisfy you. No matter what I say you will pick away my words for your own amusement. I am not your learned friend. So will you stop trolling please?

It is not my amusement, I don't like when people fabricate information.
I was not the one who wrote that this game is EGS exclusive, while in practice it is not (and I pointed it out). You corrected that part, but then you write that I'm trolling? Excuse me??

Then I ask you a question of ownership of things, you claim that it's better to not own things and just own permission to use things you supposedly buy. I disagree, full stop, and then I'm trolling again?

Something is wrong with you.

I'll wait till it comes to Steam.
chylex Sep 12, 2024 @ 11:24am
Waiting for Steam too. Steam adds a ton of value over buying the game elsewhere and adding it as a non-Steam game.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

The reason you are trolling is not because of the arguments themselves, it is due to the placement of the arguments. If this was a thread about whether steam is good or bad, you would be in the right place. It is not. It is a question about whether this particular game is coming out on steam, and you have will the first page with junk about an argument instead of a real answer.

For Your Information:
The reason Steam is preferred is that many users value convenience quite highly. In this case, the conveniences of 'all my games are in one place' and 'steam provides ratings of what games are good along with discovery of good new games'

If you don't value those, the dev's website is available for you. We still like steam.

FYI: I am not planning on subscribing to this thread, I will not see any response given.
