Quake III Arena

Mouse Lockup
My mouse will randomly lock up sometimes and the weapons will either not shoot for a brief moment, or they will be stuck in shoot mode. Any way to fix it?

Last time I played quake was when i was still using 32bit OS. Can it be related?

Sounds like netlag possibly, but "sometimes" QuakeIII can have issues if say your mouse batteries went dead & you changed them, plugged in or turned on a joystick ect. it's caused by the older version of dirrect-X that this older point release of Q3 uses, try simply rebooting Q3 to fix it, if your issue persists it's either your mouse, or you need to reinstal Q3

Drawfps ONLY shows your FPS... you could try ;com max_fps 60, but I'd bet if you tweak some options (I had to change the colors & textures ect. from default to 32 & GL extensions off on Mine running on Win-7) or a few other things it'd clear up... older games often have issues because they run off of REALLY old versions of dirrect-X (if you feel like doing a little digging the Steam/Steam apps/common/QuakeIII [then I forget which file it's in] has a setup exe. file for quake3 you can tweak the older active-X with])

You're not alone OP. I am getting the mouse button lockup as well. It happens a lot, almost every other time I go to get in combat. I go to shoot and my mouse just doesn't do anything. I click, no shoot, have to click again for it to happen. Then sometimes it gets "stuck" shooting and I have to click again to unlock it. No idea what's causing it but here's my specs:

CPU: i7 3770k 4.5Ghz
GPU: EVGA GTX 780 +150/+300 Core/Memory
Mobo: ASRock Z77 Extreme4
PSU: BFG Tech 1200w-EX
SSD: Samsung 830 256GB Sata3
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64

I found the real solution, it's from your mouse's polling rate. Mine is set to 1000hz and I had to drop it to 250hz in the Logitech Gaming Software. This is the proper fix.

Go to console, type "/in_mouse -1"

Fixed for me

The problem the mouse lockup people are having is called nmouse rollover. Basically the USB input can only handle so many commands at once in a split second so the keyboard or mouse locks up. TO fix the problem you need to put the keyboard on the PS2 port instead. This problem will go away.

I set the option to 500 and the problem has gone. Thank you

Fortunately in_mouse -1 solves this very annoying problem but it introduces another one: mouse acceleration that depends on windows system settings.

This is definitely not an issue with the mouse. How could it be the mouse when it works with everything on my machine except this game? The default mouse handling mode (in_mouse 1) might use kind of dodgy event-driven method combined with polling. If this is the case then the frequency of the missed events can depend on the frame rate and the reporting rate of the mouse. With in_mouse 1 the skipped events happened very frequently (every 1-5 seconds) on my machine with 60FPS and 1000Hz usb mouse reporting.

This has been a problem for a long time. Even when the game 1st came out. What can also cause mouse lockup is keyboards that don't have the n-rollover protection. So when you are mashing keys it affects the mouse. The solution back then was using not using the keyboard through the USB port.

I have the same issue, and both my mouse and keyboard are USB connected. Interestingly, I have zero issues until I get to that "critical moment", gotta shoot now, I press mouse button, and I get nothing. Only for that exact moment, and it clears .5 second later. Seems to me to be something in the code rather than my hardware.

It's like a dreaded "click" from your gun, but in Quake III. Crazy.
