It is recommended to use a source port to play Quake 3 which contain many bug fixes and quality of life improvements for modern Windows PC's. The two most used are ioquake3 and quake3e.
ioquake3: https://ioquake3.org/
quake3e: https://github.com/ec-/Quake3e
I hope this helps, happy fragging.
Also, if you decide to use a source port for Quake 3, you can download an aspect correct ratio HUD for Q3, so you can play the game without having to have a stretched HUD. This only works for the vanilla game (unmodded) and on non pure servers, should you wish to play online.
HUD is available here: https://clover.moe/flexible-hud-for-ioq3/
I also recommend the fixed and improved exe - quake3e project. Especially the vulcan version, performance is amazing.
The 132c link on there has been dead for a while now bud
best to get it from here

alot of modders who ran independent sites / used fileplanet / gamespy etc back in the day have been slowly migrating their stuff over to moddb since the lockdown stuffs started
Thanks for letting me know, I should have checked. With the forums still active I thought the links would be fine. Now I know to avoid.
