Quake III Arena

Quake III Arena

Can I run this game on a flash drive?
I was thinking about putting this game on a flash drive so that my dad can play on his computer, but he doesn’t have steam installed. I know you can run doom 1 + 2 on a flash drive with a sourceport, can I do the same with quake 1-3?

Quake III, yes, without problems.

Quake I & II, I'd say you'd better use a sourceport like you do for Doom.

Darkplaces is the way to go for Quake I.

About Quake II, there's various good ones. Yamagi is the best for me: close to the original, but with everything you want to play it on a modern computer and high resolutions.

I'd argue with that. There is Quakespasm [quakespasm.sourceforge.net] (former FitzQuake), which is very close to vanilla (like Yamagi for Q2), limit-removing and, unlike Darkplaces, allows you to run this kind of mappacks[www.quaddicted.com] (demonstration).

@Duckscout, you can use ioquake3[ioquake3.org] sourceport for quake 3, yamagi[www.yamagi.org] for quake 2 and quakespasm for quake 1, all of them are quite faithful to original games.

Thanks for the recommendations, is it possible to switch back to vanilla quake 3 after installing ioquake or spearmint?

Yes, but i'd advise to backup vanilla baseq3/q3config.cfg first just in case.

Also, the difference between ioquake3 and spearmint is that the latter has correct aspect ratio, but also cannot be used for online play. You can use any sourceport you want on the same installation, like i have defrag-focused idfe, cpma and ioquake3 simultaneously.

alright, do you recommend any tutorials for ioquake3 installation? I've had a ton of trouble finding any that work.

Ioquake3 installation is pretty straighforward, just install the engine[ioquake3.org] like any other program, then copy the whole baseq3 (pathtoyoursteamlibrary\steamapps\common\Quake 3 Arena\baseq3) directory inside its installation directory. If during the installation you chose pathtoyoursteamlibrary\steamapps\common\Quake 3 Arena as the target directory, you can skip this 'moving baseq3 directory' step.

After ioquake3 installation you can move the entire Quake 3 Arena folder to your usb drive, it should work out of the box.
