The unofficial OG Xbox port also is and evidence of this can be seen on Youtube.
I’m wanting to see what version of the PC build I need to use for the DC, since that is the main reason they’re no longer officially cross platform.
Any version should work, because dreamcast wasn't like ya know consoles today it didn't get software updates. But don't forget you have to have the dreamcast map packs i downloaded them some where year or 2 ago, google for them this is the only way dc can play with pc players. dc map pack is just a standard pk3 file you drop into your pc baseq3 folder. i owned and played on both pc and dc. Still play pc here n there. My dreamcasts, I mean more than 3 died long time ago lol. try google search of " Dreamcast Quake 3 Arena Map Pack" think thats the term i searched. Reason behind this is because see dc actually had a few exclusive maps, that pc didn't naturally have. That is why you need this pack on your pc side. DC was fully capable of playing modded servers with just rail guns. i remember the grappling hook mod good times.
Now with all that said DC can not play any custom maps, because there was no way to download the custom maps and update the client side like pc could do. Also can not play on servers larger than 4. Now if you was some how able to modify dc's disc data there might be away dc could play custom maps and servers larger than 4 ppl. I've never had the chance to test that theory.
Anyways, happy gaming. I hope my knowledge can help you guys out take care.
Edit: By the way if version really is a problem, dc side shut down i think sometime in 2002 or 03 thats long time ago. I'm getting old my memory aint as good as it used to be. More google research might bring up the exact date. So any patches after 2002/03 for pc might be your issue so try versions before 2002/03 (or dc shut down date). Last version official ver. was 1.32 i think for pc.
Use the dc in game console command to type in the ip you want to connect to. That is how you can do a dc/pc servers after the master servers shut down for dc. Think the command was /connect "255.255.255.255:23896" something like that ip (255 ip just example thats w/e you connecting to)and : for your port (port is usually always the same not sure if i remembered that port # 100% correctly. So look into it, but always the same no matter server in most cases). Do that from offline side (any random vs ai match will do. Might be able do it from the main menu to, i can't remember. You can always do little console command search, pc commands are same thing, work on both, though dc has some that don't do anything, where on pc side it will.
I found the DC map files and have yet to drop them in the correct folder as I was unsure but your post has helped me with that too.
Apparently as the DC could not be patched, the PC version must run 1.16n, which I have figured out how to do now too.
As for the master server, thank you again regarding that. I know that there is an active DC community still for Quake 3 and I've always been fascinated with cross-platform gameplay so it's just been something i've wanted to try with my own DC/PC and other players.
Thanks again!
Anyways, you are welcome. I'm always happy to help a fellow gamer. take care & happy fragging.
Edit: I never thought to mention last night, but you will need a keyboard for your dreamcast to bring up the q3a dev console and to type in the commands. As you do it just like the PC counterpart. with ~ key. unlike PC though, don't need any developer or -console run time commands. The dev console on DC was unlocked from the get go. I forgot dreamcast had a keyboard, like i said my 3 tore up ages ago. Think the last DC i owned was in 2002.
lol you didn't say anything that i hadn't already said. You should have read all of comment #3. Before you confuse some one with your misinformation it's not called dcmappack.zip q3a can only understand .pk3, while technically they are the same thing pk3 is just a renamed zip file, but the game can only understand .pk3.
So what you mean is "dcmappack.pk3" If they drop dcmappack.zip or any zip regardless the name in the baseq3 folder nothing is going to happen what so ever, yet leading to more confusion for someone that doesn't understand what they doing from the start.
If you must expand on an already answered question you should at the very least make sure everything is correctly worded. Some people are easily confused when it comes to stuff like this and one error in wording can set people back a great deal of time, end up wasting more valuable time for them. I know I value my time don't you? Next time double check what you are about to say to make sure it is 100% correct. I wouldn't had to correct you either, therefore saving me some time. Sure I could let it go, but could be 100s people come here see what you said without successfully getting it to work, then here I'd be trying help them out to get it to work all because of your minor error.
I know maybe coming across as an a55hole about this, not my intent though. I'm just being straight forward about it. This happens so much on forums, especially here on steam. People not reading previous comments just adds more confusion to the answers that have already been gave. A lot of people don't understand modding very well, they get confused because of lack of modding knowledge. Nothing wrong with that either, got to start some where. That is why correct information is very important. It saves people like me a lot of time trying help people out with things like this. To me it's simple no complexity what so ever but to someone that isn't familiar with such stuff it seems like rocket science to them.
You didn't mention anything about Mac or Linux, which was why I mentioned it.
I stated it was called dcmappack.zip not dcmappack.pk3 because if you search in Google for "dcmappack.zip", the whole page is filled with results relating to it, yet if you search "dcmappack.pk3", it only shows up on one of the results.
If someone needs help with a .zip file, they can extremely easily ask Google about it.
If you find "dcmappack.zip" anywhere online, the instructions for using it are inside it, which any Mac or PC or Linux machine will natively open on a double click. No where would there be information about placing the .zip anywhere, only the pk3 file. And if someone looks at a .zip and thinks it's a .pk3, then they need to get glasses so they can read the letters on the screen.
I had my reasons for saying all of that the way I did.
Directory going be same no matter the platform or OS anyways, so that finger pointing was completely pointless.
But your reasons was flawed, you say every zip, I'm sure you have downloaded every single zip file for dcmappack for q3a and tried them huh. I think you're bluffing. Don't assume that everyone will download the exact zip file you did. The internet is a big place when it comes to files.
You'd be surprised at how many people that don't use google for stuff like this, obviously the main OP didn't else he wouldn't be here right?
You missed my point entirely about the zip complaint, you'd be surprised at the new to modding games people that drop non-extracted zip files into their directories thinking that's all they need to do then ask why their mod isn't working. Some people don't even read instructions on the site they downloaded it from, much less "read mes" in the txt file for the mods.
I can tell you haven't helped people mod games very much have you?
You really have to dumb it down to like pea level of intelligence for some people, this guy was fortunately different, I'm not talking about him. I'm talking about the people that don't comment just browsers passing through that see stuff. They'll be many, more than you or I will ever comprehend. That is the reasons i said what i said. Have a nice day.
ps you do realize when i told him what to search for was more than 1 1/2 years ago prior to your post? if you would read comment #3 i said google "Dreamcast Quake 3 Arena Map Pack" if you'll try for yourself 1st link with tons more after. I never said anything about searching for a pk3 file so I don't know why you are trying to twist my words from over 1 1/2 years ago? I wasn't upset with you telling what to download, it was way you said it made it sound like that was all one needed to do. Now if you'd said download dcmappack.zip extract the dcmappack.pk3 into your baseq3 folder. I wouldn't had said a thing to you. Except for fact I said that also in #3, lol
Still i think your extension was in vain and utterly pointless, because comment #3 from me covered all the bases. You literally brought nothing new to the table for what needed to be done or said. So my other point stands you never read any comments other than OP's main. Just thought you'd jump right in?...... Maybe you learn a lesson from this.
Always read previous comments.
XD I was clarifying information in case anyone else saw the thread, which is irrelevant to time, who cares if its 5 years ago or not? I'm not sure why you are being so aggressive. I read every comment on the page, and I have no "lesson" to learn. Chill out lol
