If you ordered the game through Steam you should be able to find your CD Key by going to your Library page, selecting Quake III Arena, and looking for the CD Key link on the right side of the screen. You will need to enter that code into the CD Key screen in Quake 3 Arena. After that it should be valid.

The key needs to be entered in lowercase. I modified q3key.cfg to achieve this.

Although the author has already received a solution, why really care? I mean, does this error message bother you from starting the game or something? It would do nothing to me at all, even when I left it empty.
Btw, it's fixed by retyping the key in the same field, but with lowercase letters. The game doesn't recognize uppercase letters, in which the key is typed by default.

If a server is running sv_strictauth "1" then you cannot connect to it without a valid CD key.

Although you do have access to most of the game without the CD key, there are certain multiplayer servers that kick you out if a valid key isn't entered.

I don't know about the Steam version, but in the default/vanilla Quake 3 one could just add AAAAAAAAAAAAAA and that would be fine to be able to run the game, haha.

most servers of older games are cracked, because they want every player they can find

if anyone else has this problem, write down or take a pic of your CD key, delete it in the game and type it in again. if you fully re-type it the game will say its correct.

Yeah its a caps lock thing, steam gives it to you in caps but you need to enter in lowercase
