Though, I almost felt the same way when I first played HL2, then I played the Episodes, and boom! Way more fun! Because sticking around characters more often gives that sense! But there's that reason I don't play HL2 much anymore, because it's not as awesome as the Episodes, in my opinion, it get's a tad boring in some areas, and feels like it goes on forever, but it's still worth it, it's a great game in itself, and the storyline? One of the best I've known so far, and it continues along with the episodes, and they get better, I'd suggest you play HL2 and finish it first before heading down into the episodes...
When you get to Ravenholm it gets better.
BTW I love your username, Sgt. Peppers is an amazing album!
Stick with it man, it's one of my all time favorites.
Nothing will ever replace the nostalgic feel of a '90s game though.
