Clarification about damage element
I'm playing a 2 handed gun primal strike build. Primal strike by default is electric so I'm assuming the damage type I'm doing is electric. So when I use a piece of armour that has like +10 electric damage, that is increasing my damage by 10.

But if I attach a piece of gear that does +50 fire damage, well I'm not doing any fire damage at all, so that stat is a complete waste? Or will some of my electric damage become fire damage? Is it even possible to change the damage type your weapon does?

I'd like to somehow fuse fire into my build so I am doing lightning and fire, I think it would look good visually if you can do that.

You can find items that would convert some/all lightning to fire, but that's the only way to do it. If you don't have any of those then if it's flat fire damage I think that does get added, but if it's percent fire damage it's wasted.
+1000% bonus to 0 = 0
If your base dmg is lightning you want lightning boosters. You need a skill/attack to already have (some) fire dmg to be able to take advantage of % boosters
If you mean flat dmg bonuses, then that would apply to skills doing weapon dmg, and subsequently that added flat amount boosted by %fire

Visuals are FX tied, which on many skills require conversion (it's technically not the conversion that changes the FX just the modifier that triggers a manual FX swap in the background devs put in for the specific skill). So without a FX swap Primal Strike wont be fire visuals even if it does do a smidge fire dmg.

*note that elemental dmg is sorta special,
flat elemental dmg is divided evenly in 3, so 12 elemental is 4 fire 4 cold 4 lightning,
but % elemental applies equally to fire/cold/lightning in full so 100% elemental = 100% fire 100% cold 100% lightning (but not burn/frostburn/electrocute DoT)

Not really, first of all you have 2-handed gun which deals specific dmg type and most likely it is physical. So you deal physical dmg + some added bonuses from Primal Strike.

As far i can see from 16 lvl Primal Strike - it deals:
-260% weapon dmg, if your weapon if fire, this is fire dmg, if it is poison, it is poison;
- 240 physical dmg (so yeah, Primal is not just lighting, it's a mix);
- 125-233 lighting dmg;
- 310 bleeding dmg over 2s. (this is actually surprisingly bad lightning skill, majority of dmg comes from physical, bleed and weapon).

Atleast this is how i understand it. You want to find either fire or lightening 2-handed gun, not physical. You definitely get much more total dmg if have both your gun and passive bonuses from skill tree of same element. Someone correct me if i was wrong my whole GD life...
1. To calculate your Primal Strike damage, you multiply your weapon's base damage type by the skill's % Weapon Damage value, then add any flat damage from the skill, and apply global percentage modifiers.

2. Apply the % Weapon Damage Multiplier. The skill tooltip shows a specific % Weapon Damage, which dictates how much of your gun's baseline is utilized. Example: If your gun deals 100 base physical damage and Primal Strike says 200% Weapon Damage, your base attack damage for the calculation becomes 100 x 2.0 = 200 physical damage.

3. Add Flat Skill Damage. Add any flat physical, lightning, or bleed damage granted directly by leveling up Primal Strike and its modifiers (such as Storm Surge or the Thunderous Strike modifier). Any flat damage from your gear or passive buffs (including from other masteries like Demolitionist, Flame Touched) is also added directly to this sum.

4. Apply Global Percentage Modifiers. Multiply the sum by your total percentage modifiers for that specific damage type found on gear, constellations, and passive skill trees.

many attacks/spells are a mish-mash of damage types with one or two of those types of damage getting the bulk of your Global % and flat damage bonuses from your masteries, constellations, and gear. this is a good thing. if you want, you can make a bleeding Primal Strike build, or a lightning Primal Strike build, or a physical Primal Strike build.

For a detailed look at your stats without doing the manual math, use the second tab of your in-game Character Sheet, which automatically calculates your attack DPS and provides a breakdown by damage type.

To see this, go to the second tab of your character sheet. At the top, under damage per hit will be the attacks you have equipped to the left and right mouse button. Hover your cursor over them for a breakdown of damage types.
Also going just into 1 dmg type kind-a risky as you can bump into monster with 100% resist to certain dmg type which is not big deal on normal difficulty, but suddenly losing your main source of dmg on Epic can be unplayable. I have elemental build and still find creatures with near full elemental resist.

So use additional weapon in secondary slot with different dmg type rather than putting fire bonuses into lighting weapon. In fact, you want to convert bleed and physical dmg from Primal Strike into lighting dmg with some gear. Game also changes elements after convertion in real time so you can just check you Primal Strike description and see if it worked.

This is a pure noncence and really bad advise
100% of good build in this game are played on one damage type
And there is NONE enemy even UBERbosses who have 100% resist (uber got 95% to all, nemesis got 80-95% to single one res, rest are 10%-30%)

I met fire zombies with fire immunity, they received ZERO dmg from fire skill Cocktail even tho it supposed to deal thousands flat and thousands dot, it happened in early act 1 where you supposed to protect portal from waves. I also met recently similar few bulky skeletons who had full resist to my elemental build, had to kill them with aeither dmg cus my weapon had 33% fire, cold, lighting (sure they did received some minor dmg but it was neglectable and i am not gonna waste 2 minutes killing fodder mob). If you have nothing better to do than flamewar with other users - pls remove yourself from discussion and go troll trolls.

And if i am talking nonsence, pls explain why. I understand that high lvl utubers do have solo dmg type builds with full sets to show great results, but you do not compare to them, you only apply Normal difficulty, as majority of players never beat even that, only about 5-12% enter Elite and even less Ultimate, so they don't have access to super gear.

5-12% enter elite and even less in ultimate lol ? You are making it up, those numbers are complete garbage, especially if you have FG and have access to merits....

Those are steam achievements official data. Try better. Forgotten Gods almost never played as well, only 11,3% players beat it and only 5,6% on Elite.

yes the emberguards have some stupid fire resistance that renders them immune if you don't have resist reduction. would've been wise to have invested enough in Demon Fire that the chaos damage would have burned them up.
