Only the skills you have put a point into can be linked.
The others will be grayed out.
If your character has an attack skill in the default LMB location, Flame Torrent works really well with that.
EXAMPLE: Say you're playing a Demolitionist and you have the skill Fire Strike.
You can put Fire Strike as your LMB skill.
You can also link Flame Torrent to the skill Fire Strike.
Now when you LMB attack something you'll be attacking it with Fire Strike and have a 25% chance for Flame Torrent to pop off with each of your LMB attacks.
Some of them are bound to your active skills; some to your passive skills. When you click on the skill, the UI helpfully list down all possible skills you can link it to. They also have their own skill levels that will only activate while the Devotion skill is linked.
As mentioned, Flame Torrent is one of the Devotion skills that work when you link it to and use, the active skill, in the example, Flame Strike.
It need not necessarily be your Left-Mouse Button (LMB) attack; just one you have to actively use; Ring of Blades, Olextra's Flash Freeze, Albret's Ray, Eye of Reckoning, Primal Strike as just some other examples.
For example, one of my alts has it linked to a summon(Hellhound). So, each time the summon attacks, the Flame Torrent skill has a chance to activate(since its linked to the Hellhound, it activates at HIS position as opposed to mine)
Hm....a combo with the Guardian of Empyrion just came to mind, especially with a weapon that allows me to summon 4 of them
In terms of the passive skills; they work the same. Some passive Devotion skills may activate when you take a hit, or when you managed to block, or by chance, so long as the normal passive skill is active(they used to be toggleble): Aura of Censure, Oleron's Rage, Solael's Witchfire, Stormcaller's Pact etc.
