For the most part GD is pretty linear, so you'll run into your quest.
I do know there are some quests, after you reveal the map, that can be difficult to find.
Particularly in Malmouth City, between Gloomwald and Barrowholm, and a particular spot in Pine Barrens. NOTE: I'm only writing about non-secret quests.
If you play GD, AoM, and FG all the way through two or three times, you'll begin to memorize those spots you're not currently finding.
Some quests can be in different areas, so it would be best to watch a youtube video on where those locations can be.
I know this response does not give you what you want, but maybe it'll enable you to pick up that pioneering spirit mantel. 😊
The quests, when you get near them, will have a star on the mini map and main map.
But you have to get near them.
I remember my first handful of times.
It was a chore to find some of the quest locations.
So, I totally get why you made the request.

*how far away the markers start showing, and if it's still working on current version i don't know
The aether barrier at the end of Burrwitch cannot be opened unless you have the DLC AoM installed and you'll be given the item to open it after you defeat Loghorrean.
The aether paths in the Homestead area can be troublesome until you figure it out.
Follow the aether path to the first opening. Halfway there then take a health potion.
Also, put the component Corpse Dust in both rings and your amulet. That'll help your HP regen.
The boat (row boat), if you're meaning the quest Kasparov sends you on to get Hargate's formula. It is in the water that first building on the left in Lower Crossing where the zombies pop up inside it at the beginning of the game. Just LMB the boat and you'll be teleported there. NOTE: You will not be able to open the trap door there until after you get the quest from Kasparov to get the Hargate formula.
I know I'm making this sound easy and for the new players it sometimes isn't.
I had difficulties too when I first started. Especially with the Lost Armaments quest that you wrote about.
Keep playing on normal. Not HC (Hard Core). Also, when you get to each clearing past the aether drop a portal. That way you can teleport back close to where you left off.
as for the path, floor dmg or aetherfire paths you're *intended* to cross will always let you do so without special gimmicks; devs always made a possible path for you, either to straight cross or with safe spots to rest up.

As for What direction to go, the map does show it. Just keep going in the general direction of the next waypoint on the map. That will get you to where you need to go, except for one part, that you are past.
Its the canon quest; but I have to laugh at myself. I calculated the resistance
mentally when I swapped equipment etc. Then I checked my stats and recalled that 80% is the hard cap for all resistances (it said I was 21% over maximum LOL). These things happen when you don't play a game for several years and are a forgetful senior citizen :)
Aside from that/fighting the enemies your 80 res would be perfect, if you're still dying to them then it just usually means you lack healing or armour or both.
But floor dmg is never something you should feel bad about build wise, it's like a, what's the term, idono, like running from the big boulder in Crash Bandicoot etc or running from the leftside enclosing wall in old 2d games, just gotta get through to the end of the path/otherside
- one of the few curve balls the game throws at us, since floor dmg is *clearly* painted fire or aether or poison dmg, yet those resists do absolutely 0 🥴
It looks safe on the ground and the ground shows it is undamage and has zero liquid, but you'll take damage FAST and die FAST if you stand in the spot for over 3 to 4 seconds.
