But the trick I found playing with Bloody Pox is you can't make it so powerful that it will one-shot mobs, or else it won't spread from mob to mob properly. So you have to sorta balance the points you put into it as you level, rather than going all-in at once.

Excellent suggestion, I agree.
Aether Lightning is spammable too, so it's useful for noobs and for cleaning out tough mobs at higher levels.
Here are couple of nice builds for it:

There are many times lightning is flashing all over the place.
Bloody Pox build doesn't even seem to be made around it, other skills are used and bloody pox looks like a debuff/dot to be applied ocasionally.
Such a shame that the game doesn't give more love to this kind of mechanic, chain lightning is a staple from diablo 2, and arc is one of the most popular beginner skills from poe.
Just spend time understanding how the various classes and skills synergise.
Aether OR Cold have good synergy with Lightning as there are equipments and ways to convert them to lightning damage.

Shaman's Primal Strke is like chain lightning and as you pointed out Storm Totems (Shaman class skill) shoot chain lightning. So if Shaman class is synergised with Demolitionalist, it becomes Elementalist (which amps the lightning damage).
