What changed with the last update was killing Loghorrean on normal/veteran unlocks both elite and ultimate, meaning you can skip right over elite. No token needed.
What? really????? oh god, what a let down. I was hoping to install the game and start in elite difficulty right of the bat. I guess this game is done for me then. This asked feature keeps being ignored i guess its time to move on to other arpgs.
Yeah, pretty much this
Looks like you have to do at least 2 play throughs. Better than 3, but still a disappointment.
Helps if you actually read the changelog.
"Defeating the Loghorrean on Normal/Veteran difficulty now unlocks Elite and Ultimate difficulty for that character (note: this difficulty unlock is not retroactive). Players can proceed to the difficulty they feel most ready for."

And the "asked feature" (who by exactly?) isn't ignored because you now have two ways to skip difficulties - either the above or by using a merit token.
And if you read the other change in the log, finishing a skill/attribute quest also gives any from earlier difficulties. So you don't even need to detour to do hidden path on normal. Just cruise to Loghorrean and ultimate will be unlocked.
Exactly!
This was an understanding LONG before the patch notes came out.
No one is saying they dont like the game, or that the devs are bad. No need to white knight champion for them.
Based on the number of players who were under the incorrect understanding that this would be the case, it would only benefit the devs to have been more clear about it up front to avoid disappointment. Thats on them. Its THEIR product that they want to make money on, and ideally a company wants to avoid customer disappointment or confusion as much as possible.

They already specified you have to beat Logh with the character so you unlock both Elite AND Ultimate. It was never said there it was from the getgo when you create a new character. I saw some people claim that, but my guess is they again tunnelvisioned into it and spread the wrong word which others took as granted. And that itself have nothing to do with white knighting for the sake of it. People just dislike it when people claim something which isn't true or outright lie about a thing. And in this case it's simply not crate at fault here.
But if you say Zantai or anyone of his team was too vague and not clear enough you could link your source to prove the point.

Also while it's surely not the most optimal way, i still don't understand the Issues with the Skip-Merits. It's a single character, a single one - where you have to go "through the pain" if you wanna spell it like that. And if that's even too much for you, there is still GD Stash or people simply can ask for a Taxi. I'm sure there are some individuals in the Community - esp. Discord which would skip you through the Difficulties. And once you have a character on ultimate, skip merit's aren'T that much of an issue anymore anyway (i mean you need to grind sometimes for a bit of money, but it's not like they are that pricey either...)
A lot of people tuned into the stream where they first announced 1.2 (and the upcoming expansion). Im willing to bet most heard how you would now get to play from 1 to 100 on any difficulty. Which is 100% true and accurate.
The problem is, that is very easily misinterpreted to mean "You can pick whatever difficulty you want to play on". Many other ARPGs are like that. Its not so far fetched to think that you could log in, pick the difficulty you wanted, and play from 1 to 100.
Now did they absolutely send out more specific details about having to switch difficulty modes? Via forums, patch notes, and probably tweets, blogs, etc? Sure. However most wouldnt have felt they needed to look up additional info because it seems pretty cut and dry that we could "level from 1 to 100 in any difficulty".
Why would someone think otherwise? Saying that you had to play through the story to the end boss directly conflicts with the "1 to 100".... because you certainly arent level 1 when you beat the end boss. Its 100% logical to think that a level 1 character was going to be able to play in ANY difficulty from the start.
And before you get nerdy about it and claim, "You can, you just need to have a higher level character buy the difficulty swap item from blah blah blah" realize that many players arent aware of this. The point still stands... the devs claiming you can play from "1 to 100 in any difficulty" is absolutely going to lead many to think that it would be a option at the start of the game. Its not so far fetched or foreign because its a common game function on TONS of games.
And, for a game that is over 8 years old (counting early access), removing a restriction like that would be seen as a good thing. Diablo 3 did it and it was a positive improvement. Path of Exile did it as well. So again, its only sensible for players to think this was going to be the case...
Yep, whether it was clear or not isn't the issue imo. Not sure why they just don't ditch the whole "need a token" or "need to beat base game first" idea entirely. Just open it up and let people choose what difficulty they want?
