Overall, you dont see steam drive machinery or weaponry.
That being said, an "Arcane-punk"-styled engineer(Techno-mage, which have Aether powered gizmoes and contraptions) would be kind of cool, and fitting with the theme, IMO.
The demolitionist is already close to what the OP is suggesting though, including a sort of "sentry gun" turret. TBH I was expecting even more turret based gameplay and perhaps a basic steambot or two when I first heard about the class. I'm still sort of hoping it will be expanded a bit.
The cultural setting of steampunk is often, but not always, Victorian(roughly 19th century), but technological, it is much more advanced(often refered to as Retro-Futuristic), with everything from airships and landships, to entire Clockwork cities.
GD is based loosely on the Victorian period(culturally/techonlogically), but with the Occult as the main "powersouce" rather than Science(although they have fused somewhat into what I would call "arcane science" or "occult science").
Basically, magic is real and was used to power and run the civilized world(in the same way that steam is used to power civilization in steampunk).
Regardless of the definition of steampunk, the steampunk that the OP is refering to(clockwork stuff), is not likely to be used, as GD is not using that stuff. Atleast not from what I have seen.
But the idea can still be used, it just need to fit in visually(so instead of steam/gears, it will use power crystals and runes).
Modders can probably do a lot of things in creating an alternate setting/more steampunk.
For one, imagine having a kill bot partroling devil's crossing murdering any aetherials coming in :D. Quests could be made to maintain the bots. The robots could be another type of enemy the player can face (since there are human enemy like thugs can use the robots too).
imo, The game lacks a true summoner class, i feel the occutist does not fill this role with the crow and the hellbeast. I want a class that can have an army :D with them and an army of robots sounds too awesome to me.
I'd rather have this idea come in as a mod.
The game's world seems to be like that of Arcanum, where magic and technology co-existed. Although in the world of Cairn the Industrial Revolution appears to have been much much further behind Arcanum when the Apocalypse happened..
I did see a wrecked train at one stage :D
Noooo what happend to the gatling gun? That would have been cool to have a usable item
One can only hope. ;)
(where was that train? I would love to find it)
I'll try take a screen shot next time i see it
The gatling gun was never useable; it was just there for appearances. First they moved it to the roof, and now it appears to be completely gone. I think I read that the devs said they haven't been able to figure out how to make the game engine do full auto fire.
They could have left the gatling gun in as scenery though.. :(
Also, you can see a steam engine in Cronley's mine, just explore and you'll find it..
