I believe it's crucial to have an AI controlled character because this gives them unique identity whereas a second character controlled by the player is... well, the player. Take for instance some prominent examples from completely different games - Enslaved and Prince of Persia (2008). What made them so good besides the gameplay and graphics was the unique relationship between the characters. Especially in Prince of Persia, the jesting dialog between them made pretty much the whole game, at least for me.
And dialogue, especially verbal is something Grim Dawn lacks in tons. Even a simple monologue would suffice, yet completely absent. I'd love to hear something like "huh, I thought it'd be darker in here" upon entering a dungeon similar to "the sanctity of this place has been fouled" from Diablo, or "there's something interesting!" upon finding a rare/unique item. Or how about "I should have brought better equipment" as a hint when the creature level/equipment in the area is superior than the player's.
You know, little things like those, which are going to give the character identity and will immerse the player in the adventure even further. As long as they are present, I don't have a particular preference if they have been acheived through a companion or a simple monologue.
Even if it was only a temporary companion, like for a string of quests(dungeon exploring? Village defending), it would make for lots of fun.
I would hope to see some hires in the game as well. Sounds good.
