You could make a fire based build, or a lightning based build. Even a physical damage build.
You could go for a caster type, melee or ranged.
So depending on what you want, or the items you have already collected, there are several options.
The system is not fully implemented yet, but eventually a higher rating will allow additional quests and better gear from factions that like you(or so I heard).
As for ranged builds, I would recommend finding a weapon that you would like to use, then construct your character towards maximizing around that.
For instance, I have found an Epic(blue) pistol that grants a 10% chance to fire a very strong lightning bolt(I think it was 37-450-ish lightning damage in AoE + 3 sec stun). It also granted a bonus to lightning damage and added some for each auto attack.
As such, I would focus on getting more "+ Lightning damage" equipment, max my "stunballs"(forgot the name) and go for the second upgrade of the Firestrike ability(adds a chance of lightning damage).
As such, I would only put 1 point into Firestrike, 1 into Explosive strike, and then max out the lightning upgrade.
To further boost it, I would go Occultist and take the slow curse(it can reduce resistance as well), and get the Familar to heal and to add an "+elemental damage" buff.
Also, the upgrade of Witchfire(+elemental damage) seems like a must.
By level 35, I would have a fully kit out lightning focused build.
I havent done this character yet, because I already have 7 others that I am playing(only one is 35).
But to be honest, I can think of 10 different builds for the Demolitionist, depending on what weapon you plan on using(Fire, Physical, Lightning), or specific gameplay(they can even be good tanks).
You could focus on lots of "+fire damage" and go big on molotovs and Flashbangs to disorientate the enemy and keep them in the flames(add some Grenado for a bigger bang).
You need good kiting skills but this will just rip mobs to shreds as Explosive Strike is just way too powerful.
Another skill I used is a maxed Flashbang. I skipped this skill before but when I tried it, it's so good. -200+ Defensive Ability means almost all your hits will be crits on enemies even bosses (I'm near the end of Act 2, I don't know if it will scale well more later ) and the confuse chance will free you from those pesky monsters that rush down/range. It's upgrade looks good on paper too but it seems to be bugged on my game at the moment because at 75% chance to miss! they still hit me perfectly all the time. This build basically just uses 1 button for skill and your left click.
Currently, I'm trying out a pure Demo still but caster Spirit using Grenado and Stun Jacks. Killing has slow downed since entering Act 2 but we'll see how he goes.

If you haven't come across it yet, it let's you add points to different builds to see how your end result will look. Great for making a road map of how to progress ahead of time. Some of the skill descriptions are off but all in all it does what you need.
As far as builds, simply use the calc and study the skills. Look for ones that will go well together. Once you do this you should have ideas for builds pop into your head on their own accord.
I know. I only have 1 point in Grenado and max both its synergies. Even at 1 point that thing just instant kills. Most of my DPS came from Stun Jacks which just perms stuns and wipes everything. Not stunning bosses though, had to kite like crazy.
The downtime between cool downs suck even while carrying books/caster off hand. Noticeably harder now in Act 2 because of those ranged yellow enemies.
