Hold position issue
This could be a result of my decrepit laptop. Having just picked up the game and dorked around with it for a few hours, I started a pyromancer and so, far, so good, except in that hold position seems to be acting wonky. Holding down shift seems to make my toon lock up and not shoot, with some weird beeping noises; release it and eventually he'll start blasting away again. It makes me reluctant to use hold position, which frequently makes me run into knots of badguys like an idiot. Pressing shift with each click seems to alleviate the lock-up-and-beep issue some, but not always, and since I'm dim and slow, it sometimes means that I don't line up the two actions exactly right and my poor pyromancer goes plunging into a knot of enemies anyway. Is this a bug, or just a result of my ancient equipment?

It could be the uh... "Accessibility" thing in Windows. You hold shift for a few seconds and it turns on something with a beep. There's another thing that makes a beep if you hold a button for too long, something to do with, I'm not sure how to explain it, repeating letters when you hold a button too long and the OS makes a beep and stops the repeating of the button.

Or it could be neither of things. But that's what I thought of when I read your description.
I'll have to test but Daether may be right. Doesn't windows have an accessibility function that activates if you press Shift 5 times quickly?
Have you looked at the key bindings? There is also a setting called sticky keys (as daetherX) mentioned above. Also have you tried classic targetting in the options menu of the game?

Yeah I just tested it out and Win10 still has the Sticky keys feature. Press Shift 5 times fast and it 'beeps' and pops up asking to enable the feature.

I simply told it No and it isn't popping up and asking anymore tho.

I went in and turned off stickykeys and fiddled about with turning classic targeting on and off, but neither seems to have helped significantly. I'm starting to think it's something weird about how this specific game handles shift, because it doesn't happen with TQ or Torchlight II, both of which have significant hours on this same machine with plenty of shift-clicking.

Likely more something with your system itself as most everyone has no problem with shift in-game and I use often.

What kind of mouse? Keyboard? Any weird programs you use that may affect the functions of either? We can only guess since we don't know your system.

For clarity's sake, I meant this game on this machine, rather than a problem with the game in general.

I updated my post above the same time you posted fyi

Did you go into GDs options and fiddle with any keyboard options earlier perhaps? Could have accidentally changed something. Perhaps take a look at the options there anyway and double check that everything looks in order.

Maybe make sure no controllers are plugged in etc.

Yeah, no, an old Acer lappy, using the integral keyboard with a cheapo Etekcity Scroll Alpha corded USB mouse, no fiddling with the settings until I realized I was having an issue, no weird programs that interact with the keyboard or the mouse to my knowledge.

Tried changing the binding from shift to Z, had the same issues, then GD decided that I was just left-clicking four times and then right clicking, *all the time,* even after I quit to the main menu and started again. I even unplugged the mouse and double-checked to make sure the touchpad was off, still, four left-clicks and a right-click, without end. Actually, thinking about it, it wasn't four left clicks, it was four commands to shoot, because if I wasn't touching the mouse, it would shoot four times in the direction of the cursor, rather than try to move to the cursor.
SInce you have a laptop, there have been reports in other games about the handwriting, touch screen software casuing odd problems. Check out the handwriting tool specifically.

Navigate to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Grim Dawn

There will be a program in that folder named Repair.exe

Run it. It will reset all your settings so you will have to readjust your video settings, etc.

See if that has any affect.

No touchscreen. Hell, it's still running Win7.
So it turns out that adjusting some of the in-game video settings reduced the frequency of the issue, and that frequency then builds up again over time, until it locks into shooting as described above. If I then alt-tab out of the game and to the desktop and then immediately go back, it unlocks it and once again reduces the frequency. Since I don't end up alt-tabbing more than once an hour, it's not *too* irritating, but I do kinda feel like I'm driving an '87 Reliant that you have to pump the gas pedal exactly three times then turn the key until it just barely makes contact...
Currently having the same issue, alt-tabbing does not work for me at all however. My computer is probably just as decrepit as yours though, so i'm gonna go with this being a hardware issue.
