Both expansions add to the game, but if you can only afford one atm then get Ashes since Forgotten Gods requires it along with the base game.
Having played original D2+LoD expo, D3, PoE, and many other mainstream or Korean ARPGs, I am sure as Bysmiel's Tears 😭 that this may be the ultimate ARPG game I've been looking for!
I have so many hours in this game because I keep coming back now and then to create a new dude. There are so many classes and items, there is always something new to try. There is some repetition, of course. The same campaign, some skills functionally overlap, etc. Still, there is enough variety to keep things fresh for a long while.
I personally feel that you can get to an end with it at a point. It takes a fair amount of hours though to reach it. As for the expansions you might want both Ashes of Malmouth as Forgotten gods. Both add to the story , add possible character combinations and content to play through.
Imagine you can smash together any of the two Specialist skill trees together. Like Lich and Falconer or something like that.
That's basically how masteries work in Grim Dawn.
Instead of Affix shards you get Components, which attach to items and give you bonus skills. So you can pick two melee masteries and still have access to ranged abilities.
Devotions are the only thing that might seem a bit intimidating, but the individual points don't really matter on their own. So rather than looking at it like a bunch of tiny nodes, just look at the while constellations, then it's way easier to figure out your unlock path.
The pace of the game definitely picks up after Act 1 & 2. It's a bit slow until about lvl 30, then you'll be clearing through maps about the same speed as you would in LE.
