2handed soldier is great for forcewave and blade arc, crap for cadence. Dual wield soldier works well providing you can get dual mindwarps or reavers claws and make the appropriate class combo. Can always go Belgothian set + nightblade and make a total DPM beast. Soldier + shield is pretty much the cornerstone of retaliation builds. Most soldier based builds I've seen perform fairly close to eachother, except cadence since its generally a underperforming skill
Cadence suffers from the fact it only works on the 3rd hit, which makes it very weak when using weapons with low attack speed like 2 handers and also weak when using WPS skills as it doesnt interact with them like Firestrike or Righteous Fervor. It also has terrible AoE unless you dual wield reavers claws. Both those combined means very slow clearing speed compared to nearly every other skill you could use. It's single target DPS isnt anything crazy to offset the lack of AoE so it's generally used on autoattack builds that lack any alternative.
I played warlord and i didn't see the fun part, like i said maybe it's at the higher levels. But playing retal builds feels just so unresponsive and passive for me, i doubt i'd never find it fun.
