I can understand your reluctance to give what's left of Blizzard (RIP) your cash, but I would consider D2 legacy/original worth it. That said, the game is over 20 years old now so most of the people singing its praises are people like myself who played it religiously when it was brand new and completely turned the world of gaming upside down. I still play it today alongside GD, but playing the two side by side really drives home how much progress has been made since.
Still, if you want to play the game that without question inspired GD, it's well worth a look and it's probably dirt cheap - if they even still sell it and aren't simply trying to push Res nowadays, who knows with them.
You're not going to get anything closer to the original experience than that. I appreciate not wanting to give Blizzard any money at this point, but ... they're the ones that can really give you the experience of the original D2 if that's what you're looking for.
If you like it, you can decide if it's worth buying the actual game. I'd say go for the mod first, it can't hurt.
so you played D3 instead? no difference.
it's a loot drop grind game, nothing moar nothing less
That's like saying there's no difference between Terminator 2 and whatever they've put out since Terminator 2. I mean come on.
