Inquisitor mastery as Soldier replacement
Hello.

Some time ago, I read an interesting comment somewhere, but I don't remember the details: somebody was saying you will not need the Soldier mastery as tanky secondary mastery because Inquisitor is enough.

But I have a Mage Hunter (Inquisitor + Arcanist; double gunslinger, elemental damage build) and he is a strong DPS but squishy even with the arcanist shield maxed, and I'd like to give him a support secondary weapon combination of sword/pistol and shield.

Could you explain to me how to use the inquisitor mastery as a "tank", please?

Good luck.

Inquisitor seal is the key here. It gives flat absorb which is like armor except it also works on non physical damage. The number looks low but since it comes after every other form of defense, including resistance and % absorb, it boosts survivability a ton. Especially effective against multi hit attacks. It's kind of binary though, a lot of enemies literally can't damage you as long as your resists are maxed but scarier enemies will still hit you hard so you can't afford to stand in the seal (not without some regen or life leech) which means you take more damage.
Having some target damage reduced debuff helps too, which inquis can get from horn of gandarr or aura of censure.

Inquisitor mastery should not be used just for tankiness. It is not tanky. Main source of durability for this mastery is Inquisitor Seal. It does increase ability to take blows significantly, but it is a static defence. So, best used for turret-style builds.

In terms of added durability Inquisitor for me is in league with Occultist-Demolitionist. In my opinion Soldier is roughly twice as tanky.

important to know that just slapping on a shield in Grim Dawn doesn't necessarily make your more tanky on its own
Shield requires build investment in to make useful as defence, otherwise it's a stat stick in which case you want specific stats on your shield
another note is you generally don't just swap loadouts, because your build setup might not fit it anymore (big difference in skill points/devos from dw gunner to swoard & board setup)
If you're feeling squish it's likely there is remedies which doesn't require a shield nor separate/second outfitting

get inquis seal, ensure you have proper sustain/healing; as gunner this likely means lifesteal, have your core stats taken care off, obviously you'll want Nulli and Mirror in Arcanist too aside from Maiven, HP up decent, and then some safety devos
Alternatively you can decide to gimp dmg a fair bit and head for a regen setup.
In general should be fairly simple to make an elemental magehunter not all that squish with various absorb layers available and its native DR support
The mage hunter i played was incredibly survivable, but that's because it was a flash freeze build. For tanking on Inquisitor (more like regular functionality tbh) you need Inquisitor seal. It's an exceptionally good bunker skill, but it binds any inquisitor playstile to "sit in seal, recast before moving".
Got it. Thank you all for your answers! :steamhappy:

It is worth saying that soldiers gain more tankiness from shields then inquisitors because of skills like overguard and shield training. Inquisitors benefit far less. Depending on your build an item like bonemonger's hood, which reduces the cool down on inquisitor's seal, so that you can cast it whenever you need to move, can help a lot. The hydra devotion is good for health steal, since most inquisitors use ranged weapons.
Excellent. Thant you all. Now I know how to fix my Mage Hunter and use teh Inquisitor mastery as a less reliable but still alternative for survability. :steamhappy:
