yep, pyran definitely sucks
Replace Pyran pieces with Mythical Mask of Infernal Truth and Mythical Codex of Truths, put
Mythical Dawnshard Grip and Anderos' Amplifier and you are done.
6 mortar traps, 0.5sec delay and you summon 3 at the time.
When i said Pyran kinda sucks i mean i actually tried it and went back to the combo above.
"i have" - i've played multiple mortars builds
you're making several "mistakes" in your notions
obvious first and foremost being you think/equate this issue to be about 1:1 dmg; which it's not
it rarely is for sets in fact
Sets often provide a grandeur scope of support, think of it as "overall strength/utility", and then you have custom builds or piecemeal setups that can frequently be more powerful in a certain aspect
i'm linking you the top20 as demonstrating this very concept, because this list/these build's criteria had to go through several layers to be considered (if read the OP you'd even see exactly what their approach is)
it's no different to AAR build having higher glass cannon potential as custom setup over Clairvoyant; that doesn't mean custom is overall better than Clairvoyant
so, pyran doesn't suck, far from it, it's hella strong, "i know, i've played this" - this group of testers played it, and deemed it overall better/more worthy of a top build entry than custom, and your notion it does suck is either misplaced or based on something "specific" and or relative inexperience compared to others with thousands of hours and hundreds of builds played/tested
GD itemization and build variety works a bit different in that regard, and it's not uncommon custom sets can be strong/"better"/more dmg etc than a dedicated set in several cases
Crucible was relatively infamous for allowing custom fantasy setups to clear the fastest, being able to allow sorta almost pure dps mode with low survival focus
