How do the DLCs work?
Hey, so how do they work? Do you do them after the main game, are they additional content for the main game?

Thanks

ashes of malmouth continues after main game, forgotten gods is more of a side story, which is doable anytime after beating act 1 boss.

edit: crucible is a hordemode with waves of monsters, independant from main campaign.

Well technically both is true.

Ashes of Malmouth is continuation of main campaign, Forgotten Gods, chronologically happens after Ashes of Malmouth, but can be triggered after Act 1.

Aside from the story and quests, those DLC also add new masteries, items, recipes, etc which all work in the base game.

Additionally, if you have both of aforementioned DLCs, you also get access to various content added by years worth of updates, which includes stuff like new locations in base game areas, monster totems, new items etc.

Both DLCs also add new superbosses, Forgotten Gods add new game mode Shattered Realm.

Ashes of Malmouth continues directly from the main game and you probably wouldn't know that cut-off point between the 2 unless you've played on vanilla before. However since it will add and rebalance the base game as well so it's wise to look up at what has changed between the 2 versions. In particular, it added a few more Devotion Shrines in areas that previously didn't have them in vanilla so if you have completed vanilla before you will have to backtrack a few zones to tick them off as well.

A few features have also been introduced since Ashes of Malmouth, such as the Illusionists in settlements that allow you to customise your armours' appearance. And Monster Shrines that adds more flavour to farming.

Forgotten Gods is a separate zone that can be accessed by talking to the Emissary that will spawn in every major hub/settlement where he isn't present in the base game. You won't be able to miss him given his bright green colour and the seal under his foot that makes him stand out. Talking to him will teleport you to another zone. You will still be able to come back any time you want through the rift gate.

Thanks both of you, but will I miss story elements if I played Forgotten Gods after act 1 instead of after Ashes of Malmouth?

Yes, Forgotten Gods is sort of a continuation of quest chain that happens in second half of the base game so I would suggest completing the base game and sidequests before you move to Forgotten Gods. There are some very minor relations between AoM and FG, but you can start FG before Malmouth and you should be fine story-wise.

Gameplay wise, you can start Forgotten Gods after Act 1 and complete trials, to gain access to Conclave and unlock three reputations, which might be helpful later on, this part should be spoiler-free.
