64 bit executable refuses to launch
Has anyone else run into this issue and / or found a solution for it?

Attempting to run the 64 bit version is futile. The 32 bit application launches and runs fine, it's just the the 64-bit executable will not run at all.

using the /x64 launch option, or selecting the 64 bit version directly in steam or directly running the .exe from the x64 folder all return the same results : absolutely nothing. In steam, after clicking play the option changes to 'stop' and then 'play' again immediately, because the application does not launch. Same when trying the executable directly : nothing happens.

Things I have tried:

Complete re-install across 3 separate drives, same result. Tried verifying and re verifying game cache. Tried setting different affinity for processors since some games will not run on a 24 core machine (Rocksmith 2014 is a good example of this, I have to turn off 8 cores to get it to run); but nothing seems to work for this title. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

No, there are no mods.
Yes, I meet the minimum specs for 64 bit:
i913000kf, rtx 4090, win 11

tried whitelisting/making a manual exclusion for the grimdawn in your anti virus and windows defender?

^this is normal btw, for whatever reason you cannot (and never could) run the x64 exe direct and always had to use the redirect
why that is i can't say, but that part is normal, not being able to launch with /64 command or setting in steam launcher is not tho

unsure what would otherwise cause just refusal to launch, if it atleast launched but then blackscreened might have ideas, but not launching at all, would make me think something might be blocking it or otherwise interfering
unsure if settings can do that, but you can try use the repair tool in grim dawn install folder (super quick) should reset the game to default, maybe that can do a little enough

i'm sure Z gonna find this post, but probably doesn't hurt to poke them direct

I have the game folder and documents folder set to ignore in my anti-virus; which is Bitdefender.

I have also tried the repair tool, and the behavior persists.

Thank you for your reply.

I was really hoping some of the recent updates would have fixed this, but sadly no. It's a baffling predicament to be sure.

Lol.

I have played it for a bit and do like the game a lot, just the fact of not being able to run 64 bit executable that really grinds my gears.

There must be a solution . . . .

Maybe it is not CPU related. Are your GPU drivers updated? Maybe check the GeForce Experience for a manual update and use the recommended settings for GD within NGE.

If you are running Windows you need nothing more for antivirus than Windows Defender. Anything else is just bloat and un needed and can cause issues like you are experiencing. You shouldn’t have to exclude your game folder and your documents folder from your antivirus.

Disable, or remove bit defender and start there.

Definitely post back when you figure it out.

No I shouldn't, this was done just as a test, since I tried many other possible solutions first.

I appreciate your advice, but I will not be cancelling my subscription to Bitdefender.

I tried running the game with Bitdefender deactivated anyway, and the results are the same.

I’m pretty sure it’s not Bitdefender, but some of these 3rd part antivirus programs don’t play nice until you totally remove them. And, some of them don’t actually let you remove them without extra work.

Definitely post back when you solve it. Have you tried going to Crate’s website and post in their forums? I’m betting you will get a faster response.

I found this. Maybe this will help you out.

SOLVED: So I found an old post that seemed to do the trick. Despite having Steam showing it will launch the x64 version, I had to manually add "/x64" to the launch options. Seems to be working now.

For anyone interested, right click Grim Dawn in Steam, select Properties, and add "/x64" (no quotes) to the custom launch options box at the bottom.

As can be seen in the OP, I tried the /x64 option to no avail.

I will present my issue on the Crate forums, thank you for your assistance.
comatose did you add an additional manual exclusion in bitdefender for the entirety fo the grim dawn game folder, and the 2 exes additionally?
*after update 1.2 there was another bitdefender user that said they had to extra exclude stuff for grim dawn, wasn't related to teh 64 not launching but being unable to change game settings(options file being blocked)
my thinking being perhaps bitdefender is either preventing steam or the 64bit exe being launched specifically, so maybe an extra step needs to be added so it's not
otherwise try deleting the x64 exe, verify game files(so it gets redownloaded) and set launch settings again to see if it will this time

If this is the case, you may perhaps not be running steam as administrator,
Try that on the steam.exe and then try 64bit through the steam interface again

Holy crap guys. I finally got it!

Reinstalling visual C++ libraries fixed the issue for me.

Can now play in 64 bit environment.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions, hopeful this helps someone else too!
