You can put a few points in ABB to see if it's more your style and switch it around later if you prefer that skill.
Use ABB and Lethal Assault to start off and play around a bit. It is a great leveling skill. You can always pull points away from it later.
For a cold build i had lots of fun with a reaper (necromacer as 2nd mastery), using twohanded weapons rather than DW in that case (ABB and bone harvest as main damage sources)
Piercing damage is also easy to build, using soldier or Inquisitor as 2nd mastery.
depending on second mastery choice and, of course, gear they can do pretty much everything: melee, caster, range, and even some kind of summoner.
the most straight forward way for nightblade is propably dualwielding melee doing either pierce, cold or poison/acid dmg.
i hope you already know www.grimtools.com. if not, there is no better site for theorycrafting your build and potential gear.
Cold/Lightning/Acid Cadence, Elemental Blade Ark, Elemental Forcewave, or Shadow Strike, Phantasmal Blades.
that's some horrible stuff "imo"
*specially more so to a lesser experienced player, since outside cold NB has horrible elemental synergy, and goes worse with cadence mechanics, and much worse if not using specific fire Nightblade items
