I haven't played Grim Dawn in awhile, and kept telling myself I was going to stay away until the expansion hit, but I wouldn't mind having a few lvl100's before Fangs comes out. I'm gonna start playing again tonight after having deleted all of my previous guys and basically treat it like a brand new game from this point forward. That said, my first impressions pretty much mirror your own. I'm honestly not sure how I feel about it. Still processing the changes, even though I'm sure they will be positive ones in the long run.
I absolutely love GD, and adore the work Crate continues to put into this game. There is, however, that part of me that is reluctant to sink too much time into a game until it's finally content complete because I just feel like the older I get, the less inclined I am to have to re-learn the mechanics of a game I already spent a lot of time with. I agree with DySFunction that it feels like a completely new game from 1.2 onwards, at least from the little I've played so far. That is likely all for the good, but it'll take time to adjust for sure.
Being a very long time Diablo 1 and 2 vet, I too find the move to more "active" gameplay mechanics that are applied by default across the board rather than acquired through class specific skills or unique gear a bit jarring, especially since GD was so heavily inspired by the comparatively slower pace of those earlier titles in particular and it showed. It's all good, I just need to get used to it again.
literally is, we know it is, so much so that people reported specific language related bugs and wrong grammar for translation

when you then have a local issue of something blocking the game from saving to that file you need to remove that interference "so the game can save to its file like its supposed to"
^this is usually an easy fix btw,
the issue is not the folder being read only but if the *file* is
folder is supposed to be, file inside it is not
^note that even if the options.txt or keybinds.txt is not actually read only it might not be the issue, it can be Windows Defender or Antivirus "as you can see by many other user posts and the devs informing you to whitelist" - sometimes it's not even WD or AV but onedrive interfering, either applying the read only status or just hijacking it
you don't actually need to edit it
depending on your local issue the quick dirty fix of simply just deleting the file might be enough for the game to be able to create a new and have renewed access to
^for some it's just a temp fix, and if it's just a temp fix it's usually an indicator something more controlling is interfering usually AV, sometimes Windows Defender, or still more rarely Onedrive
devs have absolutely 0 control over your system or local settings or programs that can interfere nor your settings in those programs
it's why they have the FAQ informing about excluding the game so the file can work normally
as you can see by the users doing the things and getting it fixed
it's extremely simple; if the game can't perform it's normal task something on the PC is preventing it
and in this case it's so known that "when approached proper" it basically always fixes it, and the 4 main known causes are Anti virus, windows defender, Onedrive or more rarely file permission issue
don't just dismiss it offhand or with a casual "i went flipped a switch" because it didn't fix it
as you can tell by other users some had to dig deeper in their Windows Defender settigns, or anti virus settings, or even onedrive
^this is important that those steps are proper taken, so something doesn't get missed or overlooked that might not seem significant
several users went "i excluded the exe"; but that wasn't enough
some even did the full whitelist; but turned out they needed to go deeper
some turned off shields/active; and still their program had an active layer like deem ransomware protection
if the quick dirty fix of deleting the file is not enough, then it suggests WD, AV or slightly possible Onedrive (tho usually that would only be if the file is in the Onedrive documents folder)
whitelist/manually exclude the *entire* grim dawn game install folder, and the documents/my games/grim dawn folder
turn off/disable any active deep scans/ransomware protection for those locations too
don't just assume WD is turned off but make the exclusions anyway, likewise for AV, and even if you dont' actively use Onedrive still check if it's applying read only (again it doesnt' matter for the folder but the file itself, so inspect the keybinds file and if it's read only disable it onedrive)
*the fact you mention you can even edit the file manually would suggest it's not a file permission issue, since then it would prevent you from saving the file after editing
(unless i got that wrong and you never actually made an edit?)
which means it's again more likely it's one of the 3 main suspects
**and if you happen to have Avast or... Fsecure? they are notorious for disliking grim dawn, again "as per many other user mentions"
***also super important to note the location of the files, if they are not in C:\Users\*user name*\Documents\My Games\Grim Dawn\Settings it immediately is a red flag, usually Onedrive hijacking, sometimes AV quarantining(rarely)
Sunder is something that can be anticipated and mitigated through various means and its overall impact in the campaign feels appropriate so far. I have no idea what it's like in SR yet but I'm sure it's all good, considering again this was tested thoroughly already by seasoned players.
I'm just so used to being let down, and Crate has yet to ever do that for me. It's rare. Anyway, back to enjoying GD again.
EDIT: I have no idea if they did some kind of optimization tweaks or not, but I have noticed my laptop running about 6-7c cooler on average since the patch on my fairly mid gaming laptop. This is always appreciated, but I have no idea if this was part of the patch or maybe it's just ambient temps being kind the last few days. Seems like it's probably the former to me.
