You can start Elite after you kill the boss in the Necropolis, you even get a message onscreen to say that the next difficulty is now unlocked. Up to you whether you play one/both expansions before moving up or jump straight in once you unlock it.

I would highly suggest you do the DLC stuff before going to elite, as you unlock more factions so you can get rep for them asap. the rep from FG unlocks really fast, but the factions from AoM take a little time to unlock, but not much time investment.

Just go to Coven to unlock them as you gain rep with them by killing Beast, just like with Homestead so once you start Elite, you'll gain rep pretty fast.
You can also unlock those canibals in Barrowholm if you plan to work for them, but I always attack them so whatever. But unlock Coven.
Farming rep for Cults in FG is relatively fast in Ultimate difficulty.

The augments that barrowholm have are insanely beneficial, so you're missing out.

If you are into crazy min-max builds or if your build really needs it, and you can be still fine without them.
On the other hand, they are great for farming for some builds, too so it's two way street.

And I don't talk about RP reasons which are important for me as this is RPG after all. Anyway, RP reasons aside, I like to farm them a lot ;).

Only reason i dont play this game anymore. I did three runs, last one in elite. After one year, starting again from the beginning and having to complete the whole game again to just unlock elite is a no no for me. Too tedious. And im amazed they didnt implement another way to start elite from the beginning. Once you explored the entire game in normal difficulty, why im even going to bother to do everything over again??. I want to enjoy the game from the beginning, i cant do that in normal difficulty. And yet, i have to play alllll over to just start again in elite. Ridiculous.

Old school ARPG. At least you do have merit tokens you can buy once you get a character into the Elite or Ultimate FG content for your other characters to use to skip difficulties.

Yes. You need to have Forgotten Gods DLC and you can't have FG DLC without Ashes of Malmouth DLC, too.

In Conclave of Three (FG starting zone) there is a NPC trader which sells Difficulty Merits, once you beat Elite and then again Ultimate difficulty.

So, you buy Merit, put in transfer stash, your new character just read it. They are used for speed leveling.
