Fun ranged would be Purifier (Inquisitor/demolitionist). Once again, stick to all passives except for heal and thermite mine.
Pets could be either Conjurer (Shaman/Occultist) or Ritualist (Shaman/Necromancer). Both work well.
If you aren't sure, you could pretty much go Shaman + anything.
Only has the base game so Purifier and Ritualist aren't possible for them.
Get the DLC and I'll raise you Demo/Oathkeeper...fire in the hole
- A basic attack skill that improves melee damage (one ot two handed).
- A hard area attack that can be used with two handed weapons, melee or ranged.
- A weak but strategically useful magic projectile if you use vitality damage.
- A semipermanent resistant pet.
- A temporal venomous pet.
- A semi permanent aura buff.
- Some totems to control circumstances.
I think you will learn a lot about the melee and magic warrior mechanics with this character, and you will have some ranged potential to explore. Once you know how it goes, you have more mental material to choose your second mastery.
If you preffer something more ranged oriented, you could use the Demolitionist, and harden the character with the soldier mastery; you will not have mobile pets, but the character will be some sort of fire warrior with nice melee and ranged potential. The con is that the oathkeeper is a fire (or venom) one hand warrior, and it could be redundant in your character colection once you get hooked.
The soldier mastery is very reliable for melee, but too effective; that makes it somehow boring, and better as improvement of another class. At least for me. The same for the magic ranged arcanist: once you unlock the Albretch ray, it's possible you won't need any other skill. BUT... maybe the battlemage (soldier+arcanist) will provide you some interesting experience too, because of some arcanist skills that support melee actions and can be used in melee range, like the ice and fire novas; no pets, but with so much power...
Enjoy the game. It's one of my favorites for that reason: it has a lot of viable builds, nearly all possible, at least on normal/veteran mode.
