Only 27.3 percent completed the game?
Completed the basic game today and i am very surprised, that only 27.3 percent completed it. Really? These stats must be false.

Last I looked only like ~50% of owners even finish the first act. I suspect that a lot of people buy it when it goes on sale (just $8 US or so) and then never get around to playing it.

Those are the Steam number only no?, doesn't count for GOG folks and the console players, which I'm sure they exist too.
Probably and it's not unique to GD. If you check you'll probably find that it's the same for most games out there.

That's true. Just a few % are playing endgame (Shattered Realm, Crucible & Celestials). And for those 1-2% of players Crate is still releasing patches every year. :>

You would be surprised how many people tune out because the game is too slow in the beginning. Using veteran can hurt your experience as a new player (and old, if you level alt characters don't use veteran. In fact don't use veteran at all :D)

Some people get lost on main quest.

Some people probably give up because their character/build does not work.

Some quit because they do not wanna read up on mechanics.

And also lot of people own just the base game without expansion and they have it collecting dust in their library :D

Yes, it´s only the steam numbers. I was wondering about it, because people who like the hack and slay genre and buy the game would play the basic story. If not more. I for myself, if i buy a hack and slay game i play it completely until the endgame. I only would stop, if i don´t like it. So i was wondering, if or why people maybe wouldn´t like the game.
Because i know of a lot of people who love this game and play it again and again. :)

free/trial weekends also skewed those numbers, I think that was 2018 or 2019 iirc.

Yeah, i only meant the basic game. I finished it today and will start the dlc content then. But i would assume you are right with your points. Because there were one or two points in the game, where i didn´t know, where to find the quest boss etc. and made a longer pause, to then be back with more motivation again. :)

And yes, in Grim Dawn i watched some build guides to learn how to get better. Maybe some players like the easy way, like D3, more to just play without "studying" build guides. :)

honestly i didnt even realize i was fighting the final boss of the base game it felt so disappointing for the base game

Given the average game's completion rates, Grim Dawn's %'s are actually pretty good.

Steam is probably 95% of the playerbase.

You just don't know how to have fun in the game.
You make your own fun in an action RPG.

First, I like the character and like using his skills.
Second, I like to respec my gears and skills to fight that boss in challenge.
Third, Find any super boss to fight with your best gears.

I'm a new player and if veteran didn't exist I'd probably already have stopped playing, normal so far has been super easy hence boring. And yes I know "the real game" doesn't start until you get on playthrough 2 or 3 with a proper build but if the road there was just 50 hours of easy mode boring gameplay that puts me to sleep I wouldn't even bother tbh.

Grim Dawn is a great game. I just wondered about this number. But i don´t know about other games completion rates. :) I just compared it to my own gaming behavior. And there is no hack and slay game i start and don´t play until the story is over (except it is not fun)- and some games even again and again :)
So keep up the good work and bring us Grim Dawn 2 or some other great hack and slay. ;)

Less than 20% have played end-game in Path of Exile and around 10% did so in Torchlight 2. Grim Dawn is about the same with 4 to 10% beating Act 7 depending on the difficulty.
Zalie Jun 9, 2023 @ 3:32pm
This is common for all games. I remember seeing global stats about 80% completion for an achievement that was for beating the prologue of the game. Literally unavoidable if you played the game and took less than 1 hour since the prologue wasn't that long...
