Player Mercenaries in GD?
Hey y'all, I have a stupid question.

I'm playing Diablo 2 Resurrected at the moment and learning a whole bunch about character builds and their subsequent merc builds.

Now I know a lot of us are opposed to change in GD, and understandably so, the game is perfect.

But my stupid question is this, how would the rest of you feel about player mercs in the game?

Here's what I'm looking at in D2;

All I'm saying is that there's some super scary stuff in there and I kinda want it.

Not going to happen in Grim Dawn since it is a finished game beyond patches that tweak things. If Grim Dawn 2 ever happens who knows.

Personally I am unsure of adding Mercenaries unless the level design is spacious enough to warrant having like 4 human players, 4 mercs and who knows how many summons.

Adding a summon that you can tweak with skills or equipment would be another system that would require a lot of fine tuning / balance and it would be a waste if the AI was crappy.

Oh for sure, we'll never actually see it in GD, and who only knows about GD2 if/when we're blessed with that.

I did find a reddit post from Zantai saying they considered and tried it, but at the time the AI was a problem so it got nixed.

No idea how the team feels all these years later and if it'll still be an issue.

I would say watch for signs of them starting development of GD2 in the next 3-5 years (knock on wood) and once they do you can start banging the drum about it to see what they say then.

We won't get any concrete answers for anything to do with a sequel until they've actually taken the step and started on it (publicly).

GD2 will be in whatever new engine they are building right now so I imagine that will have more to do with the possibility of it than their feelings on it.

The whole merc meta was my least favorite part of Diablo 2 tbh. I'm glad they're not in this game.

I've only recently learned that the merc meta was even a thing, so I've yet to learn to hate it.

Tbh I don't even understand why there are perfection builds in D2, I've finished it multiple times just stumbling my way through it like a noob.

Lol damn. I could never beat Diablo 2 LoD even though I played it for years as a kid. Hell difficulty was just such an insane difficulty spike.... the immunities enemies had, I just maybe was too young to understand how anyone could beat it lol. I'd play a char till they got into like level 70s nightmare and then start a new one over and over. Ultimate difficulty in this game is way easier than hell difficulty was in D2. I got this game with a friend and it was my first arpg since d2. I kept warning him like dude if ultimate diff is anything like hell difficulty in Diablo2, this ♥♥♥♥ is about to get real hard. But I was pleasantly surprised when it wasn't lol.

Btw there is mods with added chars. I dont believe its a true merc system. The newest one would be the Combo mod its still a wip with changes coming. Theres old ones but havent been updated in awhile. Check out crates official forum the modding projects section. Also on nexus.

Thanks for the heads up.

I don't know how well it'll go since mercs aren't even written into GDs core mechanics, nor are D2s style of inventory charm buffs.

But I'll see if I can give it a shot, purely for the sake of curiosity.

The best way I can put it is like playing Deathloop, smashing your corpse over and over again into enemies until progress.

It's not a smart way of getting the job done.

Also, I was looking at the D2 GD mod recently.
Since it's GD under the hood, I don't know if D2 characters will even have the power to stand up to it.

There's the addition of GD classes with it, which initially seems amazing, but I really feel like that would just hurt a GD build, as the D2 skills are.. Really lacking in comparison.
For me - no way. Not interested in mercs, etc, in GD at all.

The solution for you already exists - Reign of Terror mod.

Absolutely not, thanks. I strongly dislike the way mercs work in Diablo 2. Supposedly they weren't always like this, but from what I hear it was the expansion that made them as beefy as they are. They were supposed to just be a little companion that helps you a little. Ended up being the main character while you just pick up loot after them.

Diablo 2 is one of my all time favorite games. It's the reason I'm an ARPG looter buff today. But post LoD mercs and Runewords are two things I absolutely do not want to see any other ARPG try to emulate.

as much as i consider grim dwn the superior diablo, merc is not needed , we have double class and way better mechanics to empower our characters and make viable builds to enjoy our runs.
