Salazar strategy/advice

Ok, this is sort of a strategy tip and also a request for advice. I'm playing on veteran and have had no issues with anything so far in the game. Cleared all the secret areas from act one and the only one thing that was really a struggle so far was beating Salazar. I know items and resistances can help a lot but most of the good stuff is probably later in the game.

I think I fought him at about level 25 and literally the only way that I was able to manage him was with a DOT, my character didn't even have any dots yet from the skill trees I'm mainly a melee shaman with a pet so far, but I had Dreeg's infinite gaze granted from an item combine so after taking out the harbinger I just ran around avoiding combat because if I stopped much him or his summon would hit or slow me and then I'd get close to or completely one shotted and I just spammed my DOT and refilled my energy and health as needed until I wittled him down to death. Once I started doing it this way I only died once or twice through the fight so it was relatively easy in comparison to what I'm hearing from some.

Maybe this will help someone else having trouble with him. But I also wanted to see if anyone else had some good tips or other strategies on being able to beat him at lower levels without being able to really gear up properly?
