Recommended level for steps of torment?
Newbie here, going with a Soldier/Demolition character primarily using fire and poison abilities for chip damage. I just finished that big dungeon where you fight like a bajillion enemies, solo. Whats the recommended level for that? i felt like I was under leveled yet I didn't die, came close though especially with the last two mini bosses.

As a new player, I would agree with Gwydion/Kei and say 40 ish just so you have more skill points/health/gear. Also, not sure if you know but enemies in optional areas/dungeons like SoT will always be 5+ levels higher than you.

Another thing, as you learn the game and it's mechanics/masteries you can do SoT as soon as you come across it. It's what I do on my toons, which used to be around lvl 26-28 but since I have mulltiple Lokarr armour sets I'm around 35ish when I get there now.

Some mastery combos might struggle with Alkamos early on but you can avoid his Spectral Strike once you learn how to 'trick' his AI into hitting empty air, which makes it a bit safer. Basically what I mean by that is, you run up to him as he dissappears then run away just before he closes in on you and reappears and he hits nothing. It's easier to do with DoT's up on him as you can follow his location by watching for the damage numbers, however, you must have them up before he uses SS as he becomes untargetable once invisible (except pets can still damage/hit him for some reason). Or you can learn his patterns and you can start avoiding him without DoT's but that might take a couple of hours lol.

I usually take on SOT at arond 40-50, depending on difficulty level. On Normal/Veteran, I would recommend 45. Elite I would recommend 50+. Your mileage may vary slightly.

40 should be enough to go through it, though just gotta be careful.

Okay, that explains why it took me about an hour. I was around 28-31 when I got through it. I’m keeping that in mind for my second build, that was grueling 😅

Follow up question: is chip damage worth it in the long game?

If you mean DOT damage (damage over time) then yes, I have a warlock build that does very well regarding DOT. If this is the case, then yes.

Yep, definitely. I’m kind of a spaz when it comes to ARPGs like this, and I like being able to just spam abilities and wear down crowds over time.

Yes DOT is worth it in the long game.

Huh. "Chip damage" I honestly never heard DoT called that before, but it makes perfect sense. Thanks! I like learning new terms and ideas, whenever possible.

Yep! First picked it up playing dark souls, just makes sense in regards to poison/bleed “chipping” away

Street fighter term, where even blocking gets you hiyt a little by some moves - can'tblock ryus haddokens forever, they'll chip away and killl you. It's a zoning tool

Never played Street Fighter, have no desire to ever play it. So... you lost me on the first post, completely lost my interest by the last one. No clue who or what any of those things are, lol! My older brother decided he needed to toughen hislittle sisters up. So we had real life fighting games every day when we all got home from school, before Mom & Dad got home from work.

And no, my folks didn't buy my brother's excuse for trying to beat the snot out of his sisters either.

DoT damage becomes decent once you get a decent crit rate, crit % damage, and ideally anything which extends the duration of DoT's. Getting all 3 essentially means your DoT's are always hitting over twice as hard as the listed damage (every tick is a crit, and it gets refreshed before it runs out so it remains a crit).
