If you have the expansion then there are a couple of options:

If you just have the base game then neither of those are possible. In which case a Warder might be the best choice for a starter character. Have a look in this build compendium to see what might be possible.

Shaman for 2h Melee with Primal Strike (faceroll this game!)
Soldier with 2H Force Wave
Demolitionist with Melle or Ranged+Caster (Grenado, Carnister bombs)
Nightblade is intresting too, but need pick a second class for basic attack.
Remember in GD melle classes have easier life than casters. And most of builds based on Pchys attribute.
Absolutely not true ignore this misinformation
My first character was melee, and that was a huge mistake. I kept dying because I had no idea how to build my character's defense and offense. I'd either be tanky but deal no damage, or I'd deal damage but I was squishy. You need experience in the game and knowledge of the mechanics to balance the two.
Just remember to give pets resistances in the celestial area. Allmost anything with pets seems to make most missions easier. Dungeons are another matter though. Pets do not last long in a few of the dungeons. Gunslinger is a fun class. However in my opinion only gunslinger takes a little more work to get right. I have one and I have had to adjust his build a lot more then my other pet builds.
Dual pistol builds with inquisitor/anything are easy as well.
Just an FYI if you right click your attack buttons and select pet attack you can direct what they target, its literally all my summoner does just stands there using pet attack and bloody pox for procs.
I've recently been a playing LOT of my vitality ritualist. She's been crazy from day 1.
Relies on life steal, and even with the worst armour you can think of she's been an animal.
Her main skills are - Devouring Swarm, Spectral Binding + Wrath, Ravenous Earth, Storm Totem and Siphon Souls.
Levelled from 1-40(ish) mostly with Ravenous Earth.
It becomes highly required on AOM ultimate when you need to target support mobs and healers, like the big fat aether spires or the aether casters who heal each other.
