Grim Dawn

Grim Dawn

Is this the best ARPG?
Honestly, is it?

I played like, ALL of them (exaggeration), from Diablo 1 onwards and, except a few nostalgic ones like Darkstone that i have fond memories of (but doesn't really hold up today as much), most modern ones seem like trash compared to Grim Dawn.

Maybe because i loved Titan Quest before this, though i tried to play it recently and omg a 100 year old game is stuttering - umm ok. So maybe i like it because it's basically that but better.

I don't know why, but i keep returning to Grim Dawn and keep not getting bored even if i start all over again...

Suggest me some good ones i could try so i don't get stuck playing Grim Dawn as my only ARPG lol! :steammocking:

Already finished/tried:

Path of exile - horrible trash economy
Any Diablo - boring
Van Helsing - eh...
Victor Vran - ehh 2...
Any Torchlight - not my thing really, finished 1, 2 and above seem the same
Sacred 2 - i like it but it's too huge and buggy
FATE series - see torchlight
Titan Quest - doesn't work well for some reason
Darkstone - hasn't aged well
No anime stuff, but i'll try it if it's really good.

That's all i can think of right now.
If it has native controller support that's a bonus. If not, i have a Steam controller, i can play it anyway.

So, any other good ARPG's i missed?
Probably a lot of them, i just don't know.

Yes it is.

Hey i think i remember this one! It was kind of a Japanese samurai diablo 1 right? Only more advanced? I never played it.

Dungeon Siege 2 with the modded maps to play Dungeon Siege 1 and carry your characters through to the DLC of DS2..

As mentioned already, Last Epoch is good.

Grim Dawn - Reign of Terror (Diablo 2 Mod with full on going support and updates)
GD has a Diablo 2 mod?? :D Need to try that! Is it in the Workshop or do i need to download it somewhere? NVM I'l google it, i'll find it, have to try that haha!

Why would you be upset that BG3 was turn based? The series is a turn based/round based series. It's been that way since the 90s. The game would have been trash if made any other way.
It's really not, the first two games were real time with pause and had no turn based option.
Exactly! I don't mind turn based combat at all, i play Divinity, and since Larian made BG3 it was to be expected for them to just make BG3 on Divinity's engine for simplicity, but i still wished they'd kept the same realtime with pause. Yes it's technically turn based but it has a completely different feel to it.

Thanks! :steamhappy:
I found it while searching it was the first search result.

Sadly, i need both DLC's to play it, so it'll wait til i get the DLCs for GD.

But it's totally neat someone's doing a Diablo 2 mod in GD!

That it is, it does require both DLCs, and frankly well worth it... I have been lucky enough to beat the Ubers :) Used a full D2 Necro for the whole playthrough.

Due to the way GD works, there is no Procedurally Generated Mapping, but the entrances do shift from spot to spot per new game.

Add the GrimCam and No Fog and you got a very special upgrade to D2

Nice! :)
Once i get some disposable income and i don't have to be like responsible and ♥♥♥♥, it'll definitely get the DG DLC's, i've been wanting to anyway. Then i'll play the mod. :)
Out of all the ARPG games I've played Grim Dawn feels like it has the most depth to it which is something that divides the community in half.

Personally I love all the different min-max builds and Devotions even though they can be quite overwhelming at times.

But one thing that I absolutely hate about GD is the amount of Epic and Legendary items. While, yes, it does add more depth and options for builds it is a pain in the ass to farm singular Legendary items let alone full sets. Sure, there is the option to reroll set items but you need at least 2 same items from the set. It's a huge gamble. I don't really want to start certain builds/characters just because I am missing the Legendary items that are needed for the builds.

Despite that one big flaw GD is the best. Hands down my favorite ARPG to date.

I haven't played many but my favorites are this one and Diablo 3 for different reasons.
D3 was such a sugar rush compared to plenty of other ARPGS. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing but D3 lacked the depth. I really liked the Monk class in D3 though. Extremely fun builds can be built for that class. I think I have a build that can survive and kill in Torment 14. Still missing some gems to upgrade my gear. Maybe I should boot D3 someday again...

And you can level a character in GD in about 10 hours if you know what you're doing and have the right gear. Thing is, not everyone wants to rush around like scalded cats; some of us prefer the slower pace of GD compared to PoE's frantic speed runs.

Not sure why you are mad, I was just relating that PoE is closer to Diablo 2 than GD. GD is more like Titan Quest (obviously); slower gameplay overall.

As for 'rushing around like a scalded cat'; after my 20th Sorceress in D2 or my 10th Templar in PoE or even my first new character in PoE... I was glad I could rush. Are you telling me, that on your 20th+ GD characters that you take your time to savor what you've already played so much?

Not mad at all, just pointing out that some of us prefer the slower pace that GD has. Plenty of people enjoy PoE's speed while others don't. And also plenty of people enjoy both games equally.

And yes. I'm WAY past 20 characters in GD over the years (currently have 92 including several in the Grimarillion mod) and I still play through all 3 difficulties rather than speed level them. And I still find myself stopping to admire the scenery from time to time.

i do too
as mentioned Medea said you can speed level in this, heck i'm pretty sure you can shave it down to 4-6hours the "efficient" way - and yet i take my sweetass time spending 20-24hours on leveling a character, doing everything on Veteran+Ultimate and enjoying it completely as i go through it all
in fact when i get to 100/clear Ultimate i stop and start a new, doing the roguelike dungeons once, killing couple nemesis and Lokar + a round of SR50+ is all i do usually before retiring the toon

Forgot about that series, but I'm a fan of the first one out of all of them. Going to put that on my play again list.

Grim dawn is what D3 should have been.

No skill trees in d3, wth was Blizz thinking.

I disagree. My Path of Exile review starts with saying it is what I expected Diablo 3 should be. PoE is far more fast paced than GD, as was Diablo 2. I love GD also, but it is slower; in PoE end-game I finish maps in under 3 minutes flat and can level a character to 90 in a day. Very different games in terms of speed.

One of perspective.
Players can do a fresh (no blueprints/etc) Hardcore start to Ultimate SR50 in under 13hours; that means doing all 3 difficulties plus grinding through the SR (for the contest was allowed Normal and then need to do SR50 on Ultimate).

Kinda same, 3 primary chars only so far, 4 only taken to L30-L40 when I 1st started to get a feel what I liked, and all of this is just shy of 1000 hours of playtime.

Ha! Me too. Also Chronicon is awesome, I have been playing that a lot lately.
Idk I can't bring myself to play path of exile when I own this
Grimdawn has spoiled me:steamhappy:
