It's a bit of a PITA to maneuver around there, due to all the ground aetherfire, but it can be done if you are careful. If I recall, the Shrine in Valbury outskirts doesn't appear unless you have the DLCs. You will probably want to be around level 55-60 before going there.

The good part is that the Shrine can be accessed without going into Valbury itself.

Yes, the Port Valbury shrine only exists if you have the Forgotten Gods expansion. It's not in the base game/Ashes.
I just run for the shrine as fast as I can, ignoring everything else until I get there. Then fight the nearby monsters, cleanse the shrine and rift out.

Port Valbury is when you learn to hate the world, second-bullshittiest place right after the chest room in AoM's rogue dungeon (y'know the one, the one that Mogdrogen wants you to go into). If you're going for the actual dungeon, try to get your aether resist as high as you can, including overcapping it, and remember that it doesn't work against environmental effects.

Personally, I don't set foot in the place before Anasteria sends me there, because screw going through it more than absolutely needed.

If you are talking about "cleansing" the Ancient Grove ... yeah that one bites also.

The rare material drops can make Ancient Grove worth it, also a better merchant there and it feels quicker than Port Valbury, which for some reason I dislike as well and possibly down to the layout with the ground effect Aether fire and feels more drawn out to me.

Yeah, I think that's the one. The dungeon itself isn't all that hard, but the special chest challenge room is all sorts of hell. I'd still take Ancient Grove about 5 times before 1 Port Valbury.

I normally have no problems with Port Valbury, EXCEPT for one certain area. I was just there yesterday with my level 46 Oathkeeper, and kicked aSS and took names all the way up to the skeleton key door. I then promptly turned around and went back to the portal by the wrecked ship, and returned to the good old aetherfire fields of Homestead.
I have died every single time, no matter which character of whatever level I take past the skeleton key door. So I simply don't do that any more..

I barely made it through the challenge bit on a tanky char (soldier and necro I think) a couple years ago.

As a conjurer (occultist and shaman) with lots of pets? Easy.
Now I'm on Elite and will soon go into Valbury when I get the outcast faction quest and I'll probably do the challenge dungeon again there too.

But then, staying away and having everyone else do it all for me is probably my playstyle I guess :P

Port Valbury is one of the best areas of the game. Only true heroes venture, conquer and live to tell the tale.

(Yes I am one of those heroes and no you cannot have a signed photo or selfie)

I went in today blind with only 35% aether resistance, made it as far as old town. If you die, do you have to start from scratch? My guess is yes since i can not open the gate a second time right after I dead. Are the steps of torment as bad or worse?
Yes, if you used a skeleton key to open the gate then yes, you must restart the play session (not start from scratch), take another skeleton key with you to unlock it again. SoT doesn't have the ground crap in it, but works the same way. All the rogue dungeons do.

If you can't clear PV then you're not a true Grimmer.

Pretend Grimmers avoid, True Grimmers go into battle.

Choose wisely....
