You can start with the base game and add the expansions later if you want to.
@OP - I've read many of the positive and negative reviews over the years and there are fairly equal amounts of people that love the story and that hate it and/or are indifferent to it.
For me personally I have always enjoyed GD's story AND lore and find it has a good dose of originality in it. As for what you might think - no one can say. What one person might like another might not.
GD does what every good "diablo-like" game should do, however, and that is that it doesn't force the story unnecessarily upon you. You can easily trudge along and pay it no mind and it won't nag you for it. Diablo's are mostly about the loot hunt and the character building and once you've seen the story once you rarely need to see it again, and so a good diablo-like keeps it easily out of your way.
While there are very "minor" consequence type mechanics present in the game, this is not that type of a game and the end result will inevitably always be the same. It is a "grinder", as you say, and it stays in that lane.
Wait for the Fall Steam sale then. I'm sure it will feature with good discounts as it usually does. During the sales you can likely snag the whole shebang for somewhere around $30-$35 and save a good chunk of change.
Finding lore behind the events in the form of notes, diaries etc. however though... that part is alot better
There is enough story to warrant what you're doing, and it's fairly interesting.
However it's the notes, the world building and everything surrounding you the influences the game to feel rich, and heavy in lore.
I'd say it has more lore impact, than story impact.
Ah, that must be why we keep getting asked to write a lore compendium.
Well, that was unexpected - didn't think i could like Crate any more than i did!
i could agree if i lazy to read it.
I'll keep a look out for a sale, thanks.
If you like to read a lot, then it can be good/great. If just playing go here, do that, then the story is might not be great. I can't say if the story get's better or not, but for now, I am enjoying it.
