Interested in this title, how's the story?
I know from reading many reviews the gameplay sounds great, not many touch on the story.

I'm not really a grinder, how would the story be for someone who would probably play it once? Or is it a story with an outcome based on your choices in the game?

I would have to catch it on sale $80+ USD for the full game is a bit much for me atm.

Thanks

if you want a story you should probably stay away
there is a reason no1 mentions it
it is bad

Its not bad but also for a game like this it is also not the focus the focus on games like this is grinding xp/levels,getting item drops, making new builds, etc. The story is more to lead you through that while I think the story is alright it again is NOT the focus of a game like this.

Depends on how familiar you are with ARPGs I guess. The premise is not that complicated, but there's a wealth of info/history/viewpoints/etc in the various lore notes scatted throughout the game. While some parts of the storyline do get wrapped up, by no means do we have a fully complete ending. Answers are given, but more questions also arise.

You can start with the base game and add the expansions later if you want to.

That's funny because story is a personal thing, highly subjective and I get the feeling that you probably haven't read around enough to know that people do, in fact, mention and discuss the story and the lore quite frequently.

@OP - I've read many of the positive and negative reviews over the years and there are fairly equal amounts of people that love the story and that hate it and/or are indifferent to it.

For me personally I have always enjoyed GD's story AND lore and find it has a good dose of originality in it. As for what you might think - no one can say. What one person might like another might not.

GD does what every good "diablo-like" game should do, however, and that is that it doesn't force the story unnecessarily upon you. You can easily trudge along and pay it no mind and it won't nag you for it. Diablo's are mostly about the loot hunt and the character building and once you've seen the story once you rarely need to see it again, and so a good diablo-like keeps it easily out of your way.

While there are very "minor" consequence type mechanics present in the game, this is not that type of a game and the end result will inevitably always be the same. It is a "grinder", as you say, and it stays in that lane.

Wait for the Fall Steam sale then. I'm sure it will feature with good discounts as it usually does. During the sales you can likely snag the whole shebang for somewhere around $30-$35 and save a good chunk of change.

The story as told by the characters and cutscenes. Its not shabby but its far from a reason to play the game either.
Finding lore behind the events in the form of notes, diaries etc. however though... that part is alot better

I'd say it's more environmental much like dark souls or bloodborne than it is a conventially story driven game.

There is enough story to warrant what you're doing, and it's fairly interesting.
However it's the notes, the world building and everything surrounding you the influences the game to feel rich, and heavy in lore.

I'd say it has more lore impact, than story impact.

Ah, that must be why we keep getting asked to write a lore compendium.

I keep playing this game because I like the backstory and lore. I stopped playing path of exile because the story didn't engage me. Ultimately this is the sort of subjective thing that you will have to experience and decide for yourself.

I'm not that far into the game, but so far I am really enjoying the story. This game is a masterpiece honestly, I'm going to have so many hours in this game. The story, game play, class system, music, just everything is spot on.

I have the game on GOG. Story is not bad. I haven't completed much, but from what I have played so far, the story is meh, but it's more of the lore. What you read in people's journals. It is a fleshed out universe, you don't get it all at once. You really need to read. Lots of reading.

If you like to read a lot, then it can be good/great. If just playing go here, do that, then the story is might not be great. I can't say if the story get's better or not, but for now, I am enjoying it.

The story is a passable excuse to establish context and reason for character actions. It's far from the best but not quite the worst. Exactly what a cheesy fun ARPG story should be.

By their nature, a good aRPG is much more about gameplay than heavy handed story. The story is good for a aRPG. The real meat is in the lore, which is fantastic. You just need to find and actually read the copious notes littered around the landscape.
