If I finish the main story will I be able to go back to it? [/quote]
Yes. Also bear in mind that some elements in FG technically pick-up on story threads from the base campaign and even AoM. And the monster level cap is higher in FG than in other parts of the game (in Normal and Elite, at least)
So, by gameplay mechanics and storyline, it's technically Main Campaign > AoM > FG. Same order they were released in.
Not entirely correct.
The story gets altered slightly if you do FG prior to completing the main game, wont go into how due to spoilers. It is absolutely designed to be played from any time after killing the warden, purely depends on your personal preference. Cause im an old fart whos stuck in my ways i tend to do the content in the order it was released but you can absolutely do FG earlier than AOM it was designed that way.
And the cap is handled dynamically across most of the game now, there are still some hard caps on upper limits in normal and elite but most areas scale from 1 to X now as i understand it.
Nothing changes progression wise, you essentially do the same thing regardless but the motivations for doing so and surrounding plot are different. Point I was making was that it won't in any way spoil or ruin the main plot it just compliments it.
