Grim Dawn save transfer from GOG version: lower character levels
Hi guys, I just bought GD today after having spent a huge load of time on a GOG version of the game. As I was transferring the save files, I noticed a pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing on the main menu: some of my characters are at lower levels than in the GOG version. I basically copypasted the whole save folder in Steam, and all my characters are there but looks as if the save files are not up to date. If I try play the GOG version, my chars are all fine (same level as I left them, and also same loot). Does anybody have a clue on what the issue might be?? Thanks in advance!

Since GOG automatically ALREADY has the save files in GD's local saving location - GOG puts them in the same location no matter whether GOG cloud is on or not. Simply fire up the Steam version and disable cloudsaving both in-game and in GD's Steam properties. That's it. The characters will show up.

Steam, unlike GOG, DOES put save files in a separate location when Steam cloud is in use. Since Steam cloud is enabled by default and because Steam cloud, when enabled, IS LOOKING for the save files in a different location - this is why Steam cloud does not see them in the NORMAL location. It simply isn't looking for them where you have them at.

If you want to be able to use your same save files between both GOG and Steam then Steam cloud NEEDS to be disabled. Period. Put your save files back exactly where you got them at in the Documents\My Games\Grim Dawn folder and then disable Steam cloud and everything will be as right as rain.

That's because you did it wrong. You need to copy the files from GOG's cloud to local saves. Not sure how you do that, but here's how it works in Steam

Then make sure that cloud saving is off in both the Steam settings and the ingame options menu. Also turn it off in GOG as well if you plan to play the game on that platform too.

Yeah, I tried not to move anything first as I thought Steam would detect the saves. A friend of mine got Steam GD yesterday too and when he got to the main menu a pop-up appeared with the following: "Steam Cloud Saving is enabled. Import existing characters?". Since I never got that message, I thought a way to do it was to transfer files directly. Which worked, albeit partially. And sadly, I just noticed how the update date on the save files (e.g. Transfer.gst, Formulas.gst and so on) is way anterior to what it is supposed to be.

I guess what you have been suggesting is absolutely right, and I think something awful happened while retrieving those save files.

Anyway, not too big of a loss, is just frustrating to see such issues unsolved. Thanks a lot anyway!

Your friend needs to be aware of the fact that since his saves did import properly into Steam cloud that even tho they are the same characters as his GOG version they are now effectively DIFFERENT than his GOG saves. What happens in Steam Cloud while playing will most certainly not be reflected in his local saves if he boots them up in GOG. They will simply remain as he left them before the Steam import.

In order for him to export his saves properly he would need to navigate to the Network tab INGAME and then press the big ol Download Saves button:
https://i.imgur.com/ncQTwx7.png
This downloads them to the default local saving location in My Documents\My Games\Grim Dawn

This would then overwrite his saves locally and then be reflected in GOG if he decides to use that version.

Keep in mind that Download Saves button is ONLY accessible if Steam Cloud is active. This of course introduces the problem of then needing to be able to boot the saves (once played with GOG) back into the Steam cloud again in order for the changed files to be consistent. This will most likely not happen automatically again the second time around since Steam cloud is already holding same named save files already.

Next to the Download Saves button tho is the Delete Cloud Saves button - which does as it says it does. Doing this then might ask to reimport the next time he fires up GD in Steam again.

The best thing to do, by far, is to simply NOT use Steam cloud if you have any intentions whatsoever of jumping between Steam and GOG versions of the game. It will simplify your life.

Note: yes, I own GD on Steam and GOG both as well and am overly familiar with how all of this needs to be done correctly and I am very familiar also with how GD handles pretty much everything GD does when it comes to its save files ;)
