Well, I think that it is quite amazing what Crate was able to do within the limits of their engine. Yes, the animations are smoother, in a very pleasant way. That being said, it's hard to beat the tech of a big company like Blizzard, take just the running animation, or things like some spells like Magic Projectile versus Panetti Replicating Missile, or Dashing Strike versus Shadow Strike, it just ain't the same.
Still, nice improvements, hats down to Crate for it.
Like you, I was thinking about what to choose (GD/D3), so I bought GD and wasn't dissapointed: the story is good, graphics is SEXY (!!!!1), tons of character combinations, tons of loot + upgrades.
GD is the best choice for you. I dunno why GD such underrated in comparison with D3, but it's really nice. You will enjoy it (don't forget about DLC, they're fookin nice as well)!
Grim Dawn has a very nice look and toons of love for the details moments.
All this is a plus for Grim Dawn.
My only "dislike" for Grim Dawn ist that the engine kind of limits the gameplay mechanic whise.
So the bosses are nice but far from a woooaw effect. <---- for me.
Here i would says id D3 a little ahead. But not that much.
D3 offers the more secure online experience if you wand to play with others by random. D3 is the chance to find cheaters a little lower.
If you want to play solo or with friends. Grim Dawn can be great fun as a coop game.
Endgame: Actualy if you like kind of repeating / grind endgame stuff like mapping in poe D3 has more to offer with the rifts.
But to be honest for me it felt like a big deceive in D3.
Until now (Forgotten God comes out tomorrow) Grim Dawn had 4 Rouge like Dungeon and Nemesis encounter + some super bosses.
But with FG expack we will get a endgame grind mode too.
I prefer Grim Dawn over D3.
If you not sure look some gameplay videos.
have fun.
D3 has a decent enough story and graphics, yet the linear skill tree i mean 2 columns.. sucked hard.
Also the ambient, in this game it's more mature. Not craaazzy mature, but yeah.
In a way, this game it's very close to Path of Exile, but offline.
I'm not 100% fan of the first expansion, but the new one that it's coming seems like a blast.
Well I could go without problems on Hardcore Mode. If you want some tips I can share with you.
All three games has their merit and are good on their own. However with Diablo 3 get the expansion as well.
There is of course Torchlight I, a bit "goofy" arpg but still good nonetheless with friends.
For simple and primitive farming of sets, for lame 1-skill builds, for easy arcade\clicker experience - D3.
Don't get me wrong, D3 is a good game, it's just a bad "Diablo". It is too simple and primitive.
Compare D3 and GD is like to compare Call of Duty and Arma. Need for Speed and Assetta Corsa. Modern XCOM and Civilization 5.
So it is all depends on what you want. Take GD if you want deep and complex game with tons of different opportunities, but prepare to learn (start with beginners guide at oficial game site).
P.S. As for me, GD is the best diablo-like game for now. Way better than PoE actually.
D3 and Diablo Immortal should just die and be forgotten.
Activision has destroyed the whole franchise. I can not wait for them to went bankrupt. I am enjoying their heavy losses atm. Their shareholders are already pretty angry :D
Honestly I find it hard to compare them. Diablo 3 is a more casual arcade-y experience and grim dawn plays a bit more like a traditional RPG, and has a lot of complexity with dual classing. A lot of stuff actually ends up being viable so you're rewarded way more with tinkering.
