Tactician or Vindicator? (want a ranged character)
I know infiltrator is more typically tanky melee but as I've been playing my first tanky character thanks to oathkeeper, I'm really enjoying not being squishy. I only see some ranged builds for tactician like a 2h valdun's build, but I know cadence only boosts damage every 3 shots so idk how useful taht is. Shaman adds some tankiness with mogdrogens pact, i know. Any input? I like the idea of soldier subclass for tankiness but I wanna make sure that's not a silly waste and i should just do shaman for damage/etc. I do like lightning a lot in general. (Leveling a pure inquisitor currently...)

I really like to make more uncommon builds so purifier doesn't really interest me...

Infiltrator will be nice it has good sustain, crowd control and DPS but if your picking between Tactician or Vindicator well if you go high survival Ill go with tactician and go with shield and gun combo. If your good at kiting go with Vindicator it has high DPS, Sustain but you need to kite. Those are my opinion so have fun.
I would also consider Paladin with Mythical Hellborne. It's not lightning, but it's certainly not a silly waste either.
oh yeah I didn't think about an oath build using ranged. Hmm. Do you think Paladin would be tankier than Vindicator? Mogdrogens is real nice and there's also wendigo totem maybe. And grasping vines for kiting if need be. Hmmmm.

I love shamans but it would be cool to mess with new class more.

i find inquisitor the ideal gunner due to all those on hit procs, damage absorb and resist down with aura of censure, a self heal that fixes resists that are annoying to cap like chaos and aether, and the ability to dual wield though it still functions well as a 2 hander. Then there's inquisitors seal for more damage absorb.

paladin def isnt bad as you get the ranged stuff from inquistor and vire might can be used with guns to put more distance on enemies and smite is useable with guns for a 100% pierce chance. I guess it could be tankier if you use 1 handed gun and a shield. Though idk how its going to be able to make use of retaltion oathbearer can give

tactian is much more tanky and is 1 char that can hit 100% chances of a move procing and has very high oa/da and soldier passives make you more tanky and you dont have to go cadence but cadence is an option. Sometimes though i see the main attack be something from a relic as you can get decent on hit with some relics and theres runebinder spellthrower weapon that can give you another atk replacer if you want to do runebinder build

vindicator has the really strong savegry which gets crazy with mythical bloodrager cowl. It has more resists down which is king in grim dawn, lowering enemy resists greatly boosts your dps, and this combo is built for 2 handed with very high chances of a wps going off. It's def the dps option if you can get the needed gear and one of the strongest 2 handed choice still. Also this class levels so easily to 100, just use primal strike as that helps with leveling and switch to savergy later to make use of inquistor procs.

Lightning vindicator is fun, with decent RR, i'd dual wield with it.

Tactician is pretty tanky, I'd personally go 2h ranged for it. Cadence, while the big hit does proc every 3rd attack, with enough points, it has 100% chance to pierce through enemies and will do nice damage. However, if you don't want cadence, there are a couple elemental options that will work. Beronath's Fury from the Beronath's shard component, or Runic Bolts from the Runebinder Spellthrower. Both deal mainly elemental damage, but can be converted with other gear. I tried a piercing damage demon hunter themed tactician, with cadence + silverbolt (2h crossbow), and it easily hit 100-400k on cthonians. Fun times

Paladin, is also doable, especially fire. I'd use the Stronghold set with it (pistol, shield and belt).
Tactician is also a solid choice. Despite all the bad rep it's been getting, Cadence is a good skill, perhaps more so to ranged than to melee. Don't think of it as boosting every third shot. Think of it as clearing the room every third shot.
ya cadence is really solid like stated above, it does cost some of your skill points though and many builds can make great use of the solider passives with the extra points if you dont use cadence but cadence isnt bad though i dont see it used much unless its a phys build due to the addon that increases phys damage.
You can use it for other damage types too. You just need to have sufficient damage conversion.

I couldn't really say. I guess it depends on your build, but I haven't dabbled that much in range. Inquisitor Seal is already pretty good for mobs and after, that a good defensive ability and some life leech will get you a long way. Vindicator is propably the safer bet of the two as far as tankiness go and I believe Paladin you will get higher damage, crits and some great dots.
Alright thanks for the feedback y'all, my heart is saying Tactician so I'm gonna go that route. I'll let ya know how it goes!
I'm playing pure physical Tactician and she is great! High OA, decent DA, up to 100% WPS and really strong Cadence 26/16 with maxed Deadly Momentum 22/12.

I'm having a grand time on my tactician, level 69 so far, 2h ranged elemental at the moment. full valdun's set waiting at 75 but hoping to get runebinder set to stay elemental
