Necromancer / Soldier decent?

Hey guys thinking of getting the new expansion so I can play the Necro. Was wondering if Necromancer / Soldier is viable or should I just roll Necro / Occultist? I heard there really isnt that much synergy between soldier and necro. I really don't want to gimp myself and have too much of a hard time end game. The idea of a death knight seems pretty cool though. Thanks

It works to a degree if you are splitting your damage between pets and your own attacks especially using a ranged weapon. Shaman also allows this with some more pet bonuses and two good attacks. However, constellations and gear sets are the things that will weaken you in the long run. You can get only some of the pet ones or some of the personal attack ones, but not the best ones of both. That hurts when already splitting your damage skills. In my experience, a build that focuses on one damage type will clear faster but any combo of necro soldier or shaman using attack based skills is fun easier and safer, just not synergistic and slower.

If I did necro / occultist what weapon type do I use? Like a ranged weapon? or a staff of some sort? sorry never played the game before just trying to map things out

Use a ranged weapon as you level. It will be by far the easiest way for the first quick levels before you even need to skill up anything but your pets.

Melee dual wield death knight with krieg's set works very well. One of my tankiest characters with good dps.

yeah the melee builds seem to be that you have to have certain items first for them to be viable. im just starting so i dont have anything lol. can you always respec later in the game? i might do necro / occultist just to make things easier to get gear

With dlc you get 1-2 full stat reset potions so you can respec all but mastery choice. Characters built on soldier are not bad for first char too and Necro adds more to its survivability so melee Necro/Soldier could do. Perhaps adding shield on higher difficulties would be needed though.

If you'll go fo pet necro-occultist with skeletons, just as advice - aim for Hourglas constellation instead of Wolf. It lets resumon minions quickly while making skelletons somewhat tanky is quite gear heavy.

Go vitality focused damage sword and board and use the BloodKnight Set. Super tanky and can do endgame content. It is one of my toughest farming builds.

Same here, my DK easily cleared Ultimate Malmouth in Hardcore, without being 100% optimized. The Krieg items are very easy to get, as it is one of the targetable sets in the game, all you need next is a strong aether weapon and other gear that compliment the build and help with your resistances, and you're set, probably one of the strongest and easiest builds for the main campaign.
Of course, leveling a Soldier is just sooo boring...

The BloodKnight set is pretty rare and it took me a bit to find all four items. I can make the helmet though if you need it.
