Oathkeeper /w shield class combo suggestions
Trying to decide which second mastery I should pick, shield builds are one of the few I haven't really played with so want to focus around that.
Soldier seems like it has the best synergy for shields and can also take advantage of the retaliation scaling skills of Oathkeeper.

Other option would be a 'Path of the Tree' Oathkeeper with Occultist and while the skills that offer synergy seem good, there aren't as many relative to Soldier.

Soldier would be the obvious choice, but there's also a lot more gear support for many new builds with this expansion, especially Acid.

My personal choices would be anything physical, fire, bleeding, acid or vitality focused just to utilize the oathkeeper summon.

So soldier, demolitionist, inquisitor, necromancer, nightblade, shaman, imo.

When it stops crashing i am going to start a Templar but yes the obvious choice would be soldier with the Oathkeeper.

I have started a Warlord (Oathkeeper-Soldier) focusing on shield block and retaliation damage. So far it's great, except that starting from level 1 in Ultimate is quite challenging! Am level 40 now and will probably go down to Elite for a while.

Occultist works. Not amazing aoe damage potential but if you know when to run around a bit it kinda works.

Having looked at it, Soldier is the clear one in terms of support. As metnioned by Dresden there are options for demolitionist for Fire, Nightblade and occult can do Acid builds, there could be a good necromancy vitality damage build out there. Shaman and arcanist seem like the hardest fits, along with Inqusitor. Shaman has a lot of '2 handed' stuff while Oathkeeper is shield heavy. Arcanist doesn't really have the damage type support (fire, maybe) and Inquisitor is all about ranged, though I wonder if you can do 1 hand gun/shield and what things trigger on that.

For what it's worth, Necromancer pet build might have some real power given the effects of the aura you can put out.:raven:

I am going Shaman with OK for some RR, synergies w/physical/bleed damage, even more resists, and health regen.

Edit: Now I just have to figure out the devotions and find good gear.

Dont go inquisitor...I went for it cause I like "Paladin" but the synergy is non existente unless you like crazy out of lore builds.

Non existent ?? Aura of censure fire built Paladin says hi !

Pretty sure there are many better, but this is what Im going for since im stuck with it.

paladin should work just fine. probably better if you plan to convert damage towards fire (using inquisitors aura of censure rather than the OK exclusive skill).

also, word of renewal and deadly aim are always great regardless of the build and inquisitor seal is also useful to have for just abound any build.

Using exclusive skill for a price of 50 atribute points in mastery bar of second class feels kinda bad tho. Do you just straight up go for it and not skill anything from oathkeeper?

If you want a shield build you're probably better off starting with Oathkeeper, then picking up Inquisitor later. Shields aren't really that great IMO if you don't have some way of getting more out of them than the basic stats they come with.

The most basic skeleton of a fire+shield Paladin's skills would look something like this: https://www.grimtools.com/calc/D2pj0EjZ plus whatever offensive skill(s) you want.

i haven't even started my paladin yet, but i'll probably just use the OK tree skills and try them all out at first. will add inquisitor later. or maybe change my mind and pick a different secondary master altogether.

might also drop the shield and just make him yet another 2H fighter. i always end up with 2H weapons or dual wielders even if i *really really* wanted to play a character as a shield user :)

if my goal was to speed level him, i'd probably start him as inquisitor and use word of pain. that skill can easily carry the toon to level 50 or something on its own. from the looks of it, the OK class doesn't seem to have something comparable. don't really care for the first toon using the mastery of course. have to try out the new skills anyway and won't just settle for a simplistic speed level build
Soldier + oathkeeper will probably rival the cookie-cutterness of champion from TQ so do that lol
