shattered realms death?
what happens if you die? instead of exiting? do you lose everything? somewhat time sensitive i'm at 9 shards 4 chunks and kind of just keeping going but not sure if i should push it til death, or stop at some point. still have timer active.

If you die you will return outside the portal and will take a time penalty that can go from 30secs to 90secs depending on how deep you're in (90 seconds for shard 75 and above I believe). If you die too much and the counter reaches zero before you finish the shard you will lose most of the loot when you end the run, as only 4 chests will spawn.

wait so did this change? in googling stuff people were saying that losing the timer only cut the last 2 chests off of the run and wasn't really a big deal. is that not the case anymore?

i guess if someone could just lay out for me exactly how the zone works and what to be aware of that would be SUPER appreciated. like is it really important to leave while you still have an active timer instead of pushing it til you lose it? google hasn't been a lot of help.

I think thats the case. I'm mixing up the penalty from missing the time with the penalty for doing only one shard.

dude you've now confused me. are you saying what i read about it only knocking off two chests and not being a big deal is the case? or that what you initially posted is the case?

As Eddie says, you spawn outside the SR portal upon death and receive a time penalty with each death. You can keep entering the SR portal indefinitely until its completion, but if you can't succeed than you can talk to Mazaan and have him close the SR portal so you can then open a new one.

If you fail to meet the time limit in an SR run (that is 2 shards or greater, ie like SR 5-6+ or SR 50-51+, etc) the bottom two chests in the loot room will not appear. So the two closest chests to my character in this screenshot;

When first completing SR runs, you would preferably want to do them in 5 shard increments as you can then craft a waystone and continue from where you last left off (so doing SR 1-5 and turn it in and then do SR 5-10 and turn that in, etc). The waystones work as follows and their blueprints drop in the loot room as you reach the first tier of each waystone;
  • Shattered Waystone - Opens the 5th, 10th or 15th Shard
  • Resonating Waystone - Opens the 20th, 25th or 30th Shard
  • Haunted Waystone - Opens the 35th, 40th or 45th Shard
  • Desecrated Waystone - Opens the 50th,55th or 60th Shard
  • Celestial Waystone - Opens the 65th, 70th or 75th Shard
  • Death's Waystone - Open's Shards 80+ (though this waystone will not generate any loot when turned in, it is strictly for those that want to push their builds to their limits

After getting all the waystones, or proceeding as far as you can, you would then want to complete any 2 shards at a time to obtain all loot chests for that tier (so doing like SR 30-31, SR 50-51, etc). This is the most efficient manner in which to farm the Shattered Realm, if that's your goal. Otherwise continue to challenge yourself and push your build(s) as far as you can into the Shatter Realm.

I'm not actually sure how many chests appear if you fail to meet the time limit while only completing one shard, but this is what the loot room looks like with the time limit successfully met when you turn in a single shard (ie completing just SR 5, SR60, etc)

To be honest, the timed loot chests aren't a big deal if you can't beat the timer, but are certainly extra incentive to do so. I should also mention that if you fail to meet the timer at any point in an SR run then the timer is failed for its duration, until a new SR portal is opened.
