Aside from checking your network stuff (technical aspect i'd have no idea about) there isn't much you can do
i saw a post about increasing the MTU in config to 1500 instead of the set 1400, but that was related to lag/stutters in mp not high ping (which would suggest a connection issue)
I understand that it's peer to peer but why does this game have such a bad peer to peer connection? I'm no stranger to peer to peer multiplayer as I'm a 80 kid but my god, this game has the worst peer to peer multi ever
For example, I play coop online with my bro in Total war: three kingdom and everything is so smooth and lag free but not this game, no
So. For me great part of the problem is Grim Dawn himself.
But since there is a difference between ingame "lag"/stutter, and latency, ie 2000ping it seems like some sort of connectivity thingy from my avg schmoe pov.
I have high ping in grim dawn too, compared to server hosted games where i know the servers is only "a country away", and 300ping "makes sense" to me if the guy then was further away. But 2000ms is just.... idono, very very high man... sure your isp is not routing you through in trip around the world first??
yeah I mean since it's peer to peer so when I host the game, and my brother connect to my host and we live in the same country and we have a domestic internet speed of 40mbps then we should in theory have less than 5ms ping. This is definitely something from the game itself and I'm just surprised that it has not been addressed yet by the dev
not saying there isn't a potential hitch with the netcode in the game, but, 2000ms is 100% not the game's fault. you've got something more going on, (otherwise many more people would have that issue), 300ms in grim dawn i can "understand", but 2000 is ridiculous and dare i say i'm certain the game isn't causing that
First of all, It's possible to get 5ms~15ms. And it is happening in my league of legend game. Some information, I live in SEA and league of legend is provided through garena and my connection speed to the server is always around 5ms~15ms.
Secondly, my ingame ping of grimdawn is not always 2000ms, it fluctuate betwen 150~300ish and sometime it just jump to 2000 for like a millisec. And beside, as I mentioned above, I have no problem with peer to peer connection in other game, i.e. Total war: three kingdom, stardew valley, age of empire 2 HD. So I'm not sure what is the problem with Grimdawn. i love the game and I only wish to adventure and grind with my brother
150-300 is normal in Grim Dawn,
if the spikes are only intermittently, a guess, could be it's the hitches/stutters Grim Dawn has (also in SP) that then gets exacerbated "in trasit"/in the netcode or something
-or just other fluctuations in the network that impact GD more than your other games.
Ex could be quake champions, can have 30ms, then suddenly can start to lag like have 600+, and have to restart (incl router sometimes), -only applies to quake champions /shrug some things are just fiddly
ok i dont understand why you keep saying that 150-300ms is "normal" in GD? Why? just why? This is a peer-to-peer connection and I host and my bro which live in the same country as me, and he connect to me, the distance is approx 851,9 km (according to google) and you say 150-300ms is normal in this case? what? I have told you again and again I have ZERO problem with other games that use peer-to-peer connection and why on earth is GD different? Why you keep defending GD and say that 150-300ms is acceptable? what?
Just the way it is. Really wish it were better.
hell i can connect to server games in mid europe/germany over 100x the distance away and get sub 30ms in other games
not saying i'm happy about it, but except for going out and doing my ISP's work and laying down optic cables myself that's probably not gonna change for now
it's peer to peer, so bar some revolutionary netcode update you will be reliant on your internet connection for a decent ping.
The spikes you might be able to do something about -for instance if they are based off the ingame stutters; if you go through the troubleshoot performance guide on the steam forum. But if they are not and it's your network there's probably not much to do if you can't fiddle with it that way
Interesting. Makes sense that this could cause a problem if non-graphic computations are tied to or attempting to keep up with the framerate or something like that. Also sounds like the kind of thing that might be a preferred behavior in a game engine designed mostly for SP.
Have any more info on this? References to others who've solved their problem like this, a developer mentioning this, etc.?
