Proc? What is this?
I am wondering if anyone can in laymans terms tell me what proc means? I see it all over the place in discussions talking about a skill or item or such "Procs" from a devotion. I am a bit confused on how this works or really what it means? Can I please get the 411 on this? Thanks!!

Here's an example of a proc:

https://www.grimtools.com/db/items/9189

You see how it has the granted skill of Chain Lightning (20% chance when hit)? This means that each time (every 2.5 seconds because of the skill cooldown) you get hit, you have a 20% chance to automatically cast the skill.

This is a proc (Definition of Proc
Proc means "programmed random occurrence." It's a computer gaming term that rhymes with "dock." Proc is used as both a noun and a verb to describe whenever a random gaming item activates or a random gaming event occurs.)

So when it item has a chance for a skill to activate when hit, on attack, on critical attack, on block etc, it has a proc, and when said skill activates, it procs
according to a 1½ sec search, reddit says this
Proc is an acronym for a programmed random occurrence that refers to a weapon, item or ability activating with the "Chance on Hit" or "Chance on Use" effect (an ability or a spell).
basically it just means "X effect triggers"
you have a devotion with 25% "chance on hit"; means every attack has a 25% chance of triggering the mentioned effect, be it a fireball, poison nova etc

proc/trigger/activate, same thing; proc just usually denominates it's something with a % chance for the activation and not a "guarantee" each time/set effect, unlike a skill you can manually activate "whenever you wish"

i always wondered where that term "proc" came from. I'm guessing "procreate [the effect}". But yeah, it's the just a gamey term for describing the chance of a certain effect to trigger.

Proc, is the chance that the intended effect goes off.

Proc is a common term used primarily in game programming to refer to an event - a "procedure" - triggered under particular circumstances. For example, in WoW, a particular weapon (that hits many times) might have a 10% chance on each hit to apply a special effect, such as poison damage.

Further more ; 20% = 1 in 5 chance of you getting it to 'proc'
When the Chain lightning appears, that ability has 'procced'
"proc' is the initial release of the ability,
10% - 1 in 10 chance , etc.
So in 10 hits, you have the chances - minimum - of proccing the ability once. - The more attacks per second you can do, the higher the chances of it proccing.

With Dual Wielding melee, or pistols, etc. you will have double the chance of it proccing, from your mastery abilities //devotions too - Bat fang FTW
