What's the closest class to paladin?
I enjoy playing paladin-type characters in games like this, and back in my Diablo 2 days, I almost always played as that class. So what's the closest class that Grim Dawn has to that? Right now, I'm playing as a Shaman, since that seemed closest at first glance, but would another class be better for a paladin-type character?

Soldier-Shaman, or Soldier -Demolitionist, or Soldier-Inquisitor, Oathkeeper in next expansion in there too.

So multi-classing is a thing in this game? When does it become become available?

Level 10 you have the option to pick a second mastery, if you want.

For now my guess would be either Tactician (Soldier + Inquisitor) or Warder (Soldier + Shaman)

However, in the next expansion, Forgotten Gods, there will be a literal Paladin class (Inquisitor + Oathkeeper) and from what I have seen the Oathkeeper seems very Paladin-ish anyways with its focus on shield combat and use of celestial powers. Paired with some of the Inquisitor's runes and some fitting devotions (*cough* Targo's Hammer *cough*) you'll have an almost Diablo 2-ish Paladin on your hands.

Be sure to head for the "Light of Empyrion" constellation. It's all about purging impure Chthonics, and the active skill for it cloaks your character in light whilst burning nearby enemies. Very fitting for a paladin. It's a fire/physical based damage constellation so it couples pretty well with Soldier/Demolitionist and the Justicar armor set.

Otherwise there's not really a set "class" in the game that resembles a paladin quite yet. I find going for the aforementioned constellation is the closest I can get to a true paladin feel. The beauty of all these constellations... Classes within classes.

Okay, I'm not seeing the Inquisitor within the list of masteries. I'm seeing Soldier, Demolitionist, Shaman, Nightblade, Occultist, and Arcanist, but no Inquisitor. Does it have a different name?

You need to own the expansion "Ashes of Malmouth" in order to access the Inquisitor. If you're not seeing it, then I assume you don't own the expansion.

If you want a Necromancer and/or Inquisitor, you'll need this DLC.

Inquisitor + Oathkeeper = Paladin, just have to wait a few months.

Combining the Oathkeeper with another Mastery forms the following hybrid classes:

Archon (+ Shaman)
Dervish (+ Nightblade)
Oppressor (+ Necromancer)
Paladin (+ Inquisitor)
Sentinel (+ Occultist)
Shieldbreaker (+ Demolitionist)
Templar (+ Arcanist)
Warlord (+ Soldier)
