Yeah but you don't understand. The screenshots look grim to him and aren't historically accurate. /s
Also, don't forget that the DLCs aren't a must-have. I've had loads of fun playing vanilla for a long time. If you enjoy the base game, THEN consider buying the DLCs. Chances are you won't enjoy GD so there's less money to be wasted.
It's the same genre, so audience is pretty much the same. I doubt you can sink hundreds of hours into game, which isn't multiplayer one. Playing without DLC feels like playing incomplete product, especially if there are few of them.
Grim Dawn is $8. Ashes of Malmouth is $12 on humblebundle site, so that's confusing. Other sites have similar difference in prices. I don't mind the price of vanilla, but the fact that expansions are more expensive than base game, which is ridiculous. Steam is one of the sites, where you can buy this game, but market situation is different than Gaben's rip-off store.
That's what I mean by a different audience: I don't care for the online component (if it's a daed gaem or not), whether someone mods his game or not, e-peen, fancy cosmetics, F2P model, multiple updates throughout the year, endless circle of buffs/nerfs, FOTM builds, etc. I'm not bashing PoE, it's a different animal to me and it's popular for a good reason. And, believe it or not, nowadays it's a fairly common business practice to offer the base game on a heavy discount and have multiple DLCs which, if you buy them all, cost more than the game itself. Psychological shenanigans run deep in the gaming industry.
Buy the base game and try it or don't.
It's funnier that way.

It doesn't matter if I played it. Lot of games are divided into pieces and sold separately as dlc. I would treat Ashes as add-on, but new masteries are pretty important and it doesn't feel like I'm playing full game if I know there's twice as much content beyond vanilla (like in this case with the second expansion).
Quality post. So despite being fascinated by the game someone can still be fair, not a fanboy ♥♥♥♥ talk. Exactly this: Psychological shenanigans run deep in the gaming industry.
Is this game built like TQ in terms of boss runs (exit to menu, restart from the checkpoint and kill certain bosses for loot, you're looking for)? I liked the clarity of TQ and it's database, knowing that certain bosses have higher chances of drop item you wanted, while checkpoints were pretty close and you could do a single one in 30-60 seconds.
AoM is easily worth its price tag. Or you could just wait for it to go on sale again if it bothers you so much.
TBH they could easily charge another 5-10 for it in whatever currency on the new expansion. I really do not understand people brough up on the stupid F2P market.
GrimDawn is a game for gamers looked after by gamers and at least up to this point a DEV team with actual gamer values. (I say this point as you never know :) ) That alone is worth 20 bucks :)
